Oberammergau, Mittenwald or Garmisch...where to stay?

We're spending 5 nights in the area. I assume 3 of them will be in Fussen. My question is...atmospheric-wise which one of the 3 would be best. They look very similar on YouTube. Which was your favorite? We plan on doing almost all of the major cable-cars, gorges and sights.

We really enjoyed Mittenwald. Pleasant town, beautiful area. The Gorge hike just outside of town is spectacular! If you have a rainy day the violin museum (Geigenbaumuseum) is well worth a visit.

Füssen can be three days if you can take advantage. South into Austria and the Lech River valley is my recommendation. I have not been to Oberammergau in a long time (touristy). I like both Garmish and Mittenwald. For a short stay maybe Mittenwald as it is more storybook. Garmish-Parchtenkichen is bigger, and you have more places to visit and see. You can walk the Lautersee and Ferchensee after climbing the Lainbach-Wasserfall in Mittenwald. Karwendelbahn for the cable car. Also, the Kranzberg-Sessellift when open. With transportation and adventurism, you can go south to Seefeld in Austria.

Another vote for Mittenwald though we have not stayed in the other towns. We also enjoyed the hike in Leutasch Gorge. On another day we walked from Ferchensee to Lautersee. Mittenwald itself is an interesting town.

Dont know wether you planned already everything for Füssen and if you ll have a car or not but
as cable cars are concerned dont miss the Tegelbergbahn in Schwangau near Füssen
Nice views of Neuschwanstein Castle from the cable car and wonderful views (weather permitting) of Füssen and the lakes
from the top

I’ve stayed in Garmisch twice now and really enjoyed it. The truth is all three places provide a good experience.

Garmisch ok for a bigger place, more public transport options. Mittenwald quite nice, small enough to take it in but adequate restaurants, grocery, etc. Good hiking about.

I stopped for an afternoon visit in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 2002. As a result, I would never stay there. It's too big for me. As a larger town, it lacks charm.

I spent one night in Mittenwald in 2009, and enjoyed it enough to stop there for lunch a few year later. The Obermarkt is a street full of outdoor cafes, if that is something you would like.

I also spent two nights in Oberammergau in 2007 before starting up the Romantic Road. I stayed here, at Gästehaus Richter, and would recommend it. A lot of Americans visiting the NATO facility in Oberammergau stay there, and Frau Richter speaks very good English.

I spent the in-between day at Linderhof. Also enjoyed it and came back later to spend one night while traveling through the area.

But my favorite place for a stay in that area is Pfronten, a collection of villages on the Ausserfernbahn just over the border from the Tirol, just west of Reutte and near Füssen. I've stayed here, at Gasthof Aggenstein twice.

No wrong answer, all good places.

But in that region I would stay in Tannheimtal, village of Tannheim. Nearly completely unknown to English speaking tourists, recently voted best hiking destination in the Alps by Germany's biggest hiking magazine. All of the wonderful Tirolean alpine stuff, tons of nice tourist amenities, in a friendly working traditional agricultural village.
