Nymphenburg Palace vs Neuschwanstein Castle

We have one extra day in Munich which is a better choice?

We really enjoyed Nymphenburg and it is very easy to access from Munich town center. If you choose Nymphenburg you would have time for other Munich activities.

Neuschwanstein is about 3 hours away from Munich. The exterior and its setting is lovely, the interior is not that exciting. If you make the trek, make sure to go to Hohenschwangau across the street which is completely furnished and much information about the family and King Ludwig is provided during the tour. I would go to Hohenschwangau first.

Do you prefer a palace with it's museum and grounds that served as the summer residence for the Bavarian rulers for over 200 years? Or a castle built in the 19th century and made to appear medievil? Either choice is OK. What's great is that as travelers we get to choose what we want to do and see.

Nymphenburg is like Versailles, it's where the king and his court actually worked and held parties, and enjoyed life. Neuschwanstein is an unfinished vanity project. You can see all of Neuschwanstein is a couple hours, minus the travel time. It could take a couple days to see all of Nymphenburgs 11-12 Schlosses and the gardens.

If you enjoy visiting gardens, we combined both the Nymphenburg with the adjacent Munich Botanical Garden for a pleasant day. Safe travels.

To avoid travel out of Munich and maximize time, Nymphenburg. It is gorgeous and we enjoyed walking the gardens a lot. Also, there is a good biergarten not too far away once you are done if that is your thing :)
