Nymphenburg Palace or Residenz

I am planning to spend 3 days in Munich.
1. Walk around the city and visit a Palace.
2. Alte Pinakothek and Dachau
3. New Pinakothek and city or Deustches Museum. Which Palace should I visit of the ones I listed and also which museum of the 2 I listed?

Where is the palaces list?

To clarify, the palaces are Nymphenburg and the Residenz. The museum's are Munich city Museum and Deutsches Museum. (Those are the ones I am deciding between).

I would make a point of visiting Nymphenburg. The palace, and the extensive grounds are beautiful. The Residenz is "in town" and if you have time when you're walking around the city, it doesn't require as much of a time commitment to check it out. The exhibits in the Residenz of the WW2 bombing damage and subsequent restoration are interesting.

I would suggest the Alte and Neue Pinakothek on the same day. They are right next to each other. If you plan it right you can grab lunch between visits; from the food carts/imbiss or at one of the places nearby (there's a lot of them, most catering to students and cheap).

I'd also do the "walk around" in conjunction with the Deutsches Museum (which I can never get out of in less than four hours even when rushed). If you take a walk down the center of the old city, past the Rathaus, thru the Markt, to the museum, then out and up along the river thru the English Gardens you'll cover most of the major tourist spots. I'd also suggest you do this the first day.

The Residenz tours run on a schedule (at least they used to). and really don't take that long. The Nymphenberg Palace is actually a series of buildings in, and surrounded by, a huge garden. You can easily spend an entire day just walking between the smaller buildings and grounds.

I really enjoyed my afternoon exploring Nymphenburg--did the main buildings first, then walked through the gardens to the various outlying things like the pavilions, especially liked the Amalienburg, used as a hunting lodge, and the Magdalenenklause, a sort of prayer house with a shell grotto. There's a lovely restaurant on the grounds called the Palmenhaus, with an outdoor biergarten as well. My favorite part was the Marstallmuseum of coaches and carriages, toured that on my way out. It was an easy ride on the tram from the Hbf, perhaps 20 minutes.

I toured all 3 of the Pinakothek in one day, starting with the modern, then the Neue, which I liked best, and finally the Alte, my least favorite--read up on what is in each museum to decide which might be most enjoyable for your tastes.

We spent a very enjoyable day combining the Nymphenburg Palace and the adjacent Munich Botanical Gardens. Safe travels.

If you're walking around central Munich then definitely visit the Residenz. If you're driving to Dachau you can visit the Nymphenburg (we didn't go inside) on the way. The Alte Pinakothek has a da Vinci and other old masters so that's a must stop - you should have time to visit 1-2 others and don't miss the Konigsplatz.

As for museums, art museum leave me cold. I have no interest in them; I wouldn't visit one, but if you feel differently, you might want to visit them. On the other hand, museums about science or history, that's my thing. I would definitely visit the Deutsches Museum. I spent an entire day in there in about 2009. I only left because I was exhausted; there were still interesting things left to see. Likewise, I've always enjoyed the City Museum. I've been there twice; both times they had very interesting exhibits about life in Munich - a cut-away of a medieval house one time, maps and models of Munich over the ages another time. It's more of a locals museum, the exhibit descriptions are only in German, but they are pretty self explanatory.

If you are choosing between Deutsches Museum and the City Museum, I would pick the Deutsches Museum. It's aviation section is great. It has a Fokker Triplane, a WWII Messerschmidt, and the first German WWII jet fighter. It's like the American Smithsonian.

As for the Residenz, I thought at first that it was interesting, but it just seemed endless. I was museumed out long before I got through it. I thought Nymphenburg was far more interesting.

Lastly, Dachau. I think it is important to see it, but I was relieved to find it was a work camp, not a death camp. Sure, 30% of the people who went there died, but they were not taken there expressly to be killed.

There is no reason to drive to either Nymphenburg or Dachau; they are both easily accessible by public transportation.

I haven't been to the other options, but was really impressed with the Residenz; much more opulent that I expected.
I'm sure all of your options are great- safe travels!

Deutsches museum took almost 6 hours with older kids- probably their favorite museum. They also enjoyed the 2 art museums with the headphone guides- as did I. we saw everything you mention except Dachau in three days without being rushed.
