NYE near Frankfurt (but not in)

Hi all:

We will be finishing our Xmas trip on 12/31, arriving to Frankfurt from Berlin probably 2pm ish... We fly out to US on 1/1 at 10:40am, so I am thinking about staying by the airport. It is my husband, me and our 2 boys (12 and 13).

It is also my husband's bday on 12/31. We want to stay out of the crazy, drunk, fireworks-throwing crowds (my husband did that as a younger man!), but would like a nice experience... probably drinks, dinner and not too late a night (we likely will not be out until midnight).

I was thinking of spending the evening somewhere nearby (Mainz? or??) - will that work? Anyone know if anything goes on in the smaller towns near Frankfurt (I am guessing we can get a train back like 9-10 pm)?

Thoughts? Thanks!!
Kim

New Years evening and nights are always super crazy in germany. Restaurants are mostly pre booked for special dinners. Not sure about Mainz, but I live in Frankfurt.

Just so you're aware, you won't avoid fireworks anywhere. As soon as midnight hits, every city, town, village and hamlet will errupt and explode. It seems that virtually every citizen launches their own personal arsenal, whether or not their city has an official fireworks show.

Mainz is a decent-sized city in its own right, I wouldn't call it a "smaller town".

It is a shame that you will be off so soon the next day and so will miss the famous New Years Day Concert on every TV in Europe - or most anyway - live in the morning from the Musikverein in Vienna. I never miss it....

I would see if you can get a room on the upper level of the Marriott or Intercontinental hotels in Frankfurt. You can watch the fireworks from here in safety. Their restaurants should be able to offer a great birthday meal. Get your reservations in now though, as they will be booked up soon.

The airport is a quick 11 min. train ride from the Frankfurt main station. There will be trains every 15 min.

It doesn't matter where you are in Germany, there WILL be fireworks and lots of them.
