Nurnberg itinerary

We have some free time in Nuremberg in the middle of June after we leave our cruise ship. The ship's tour covers Zeppelin Field and the Palace of Justice. Can anyone suggest an itinerary for our remaining 2 days?

Wandering around the Altstadt will eat up a few hours, especially if you visit the Kaiserburg and Dürerhaus.

You could probably spend all day in the Germanic National Museum.

If your cruise doesn't take you to Bamberg already, this would make an excellent daytrip, as would Coburg (for the beautiful Altstadt and Germany's best castle, Veste Coburg), and Bayreuth, if you're a Wagner disciple.

I know your trip is over but I wanted to add this for other travelers going to Nurnberg. We just returned from 3 days in Nurnberg and, following the recommendation on this website, stayed at the Hotel Keiml in the center of Nurnberg. Frau Keiml and her staff are THE NICEST innkeepers! We were a little put off upon finding the hotel because there is an arcade on the first floor of the building and a sex shop across the street. But once you walk up the stairs to the hotel, you will find such a welcoming place. Great, clean rooms. VERY generous breakfast! And, so friendly! We parked our rental car in the parking garage around the corner and did not need it again until we left. We walked all over Nurnberg from the hotel Keiml. Down to the imperial castle, the Albrecht Duerer House, the 3 big churches St. Sebaldus, Frauenkirche, St. Lawrence and spent a wonderful afternoon in the Germanic Museum. Had the excellent Franconian food.
Well worth the trip!!!!

Thanks for the hotel tip, manuelagann. I see lots of TA reviewers agree with you.

Was the parking fee still €10/ day? Nuremberg really is a nice-sized city for getting around on foot.

Not sure where you were before Nuremberg, but Nuremberg is a popular trip from Munich. It's worth noting that the 1.5+ hour direct train trip between Munich and Nuremberg costs €28 with a Bayern Ticket; by using the train to get there, 3 days of car rental, gas, insurance, and parking costs can be avoided for less than the cost of parking. Also, the Bayern Ticket covers transit within Nuremberg as well - use a bus or a tram there if you wish, or take the S-Bahn out to the Documentation Center and back. Visitors who want a car for use after Nuremberg can pick one up there at the end of their stay - or look into another trip using the Bayern Ticket.

I got the Nurnberg+Furth card for two days, it was a great value for admission and transportation.

I think Zoe is referring to the Nuremberg card + Fürth at €25 each, which includes museum entrance fees.

If you just want a card for day trips by train from Nuremberg, the deals are exceptional. The VGN Tagesticket for Nuremberg/Fürth is €5.40 for a day pass for one, €9.40 for two. The Tagesticket comes in several price levels according to trip distance. Nuremberg - Rothenburg or Bamberg would require a price-level 10 Tagesticket for the entire VGN network (€18 for 1-2 adults.) All Tagestickets include in-town transportation as well (tram, bus, U-Bahn.)

Generally, the Tagestickets are good for just one day. But if you buy one on Saturday, it's good on Sunday too.

Yes, Russ, thanks. The cards and passes are starting to blur.
