Nurnberg: Are the "art caves" worth exploring?

It looks like there are two options for exploring the tunnels under the Atlstadt in Nurmberg where they used to store beer: one appears to be more beer themed while the other focuses on art. I'd love to get your thoughts on the two. WHich is better; are they worth seeing?

I can tell you in a couple weeks if we end up going... we are there in December and also trying to decide to visit or not! :)

For me, I know our tour would be in German (we can;t make the english time) but I think my boys (12 and 14) would just like being in caves, so we may go anyway.

I did the art caves tour ( non-beer) this summer in Nurnberg and found it very interesting. Take a jacket or sweater, as it is cold down there. There is an "English" tour, but I would still get the audio they offer, as the guide we had had a limited knowledge of English. He got the points across, but the audio provided a lot more detail.
The tour begins at a small local brewery with a nice bier garden, so while waiting you can have some thing to eat or drink and relax before the tour starts.
Obviously the art work is no longer in the caves beneath the city, but they use large photos and diagrams to show where the art was found and to explain some details about some of the pieces that were stored there. I found it very interesting to learn about the various pieces from the local church that were in the caves, and then went afterwards to the same church and saw the items back in their original location. Helped cement the info into my mind. Enjoy!

The Altstadthof brewery in Nuremberg is the hub for the underground tours. There are several tours actually, not just the beer tour and art tour. The "beer" tour is interesting as it does take you down deep into the city in the old beer cellars that were converted into bomb shelters during the war. If you can only do one tour however, I would do the Art "Kunstbunker" tour. You will still get the experience of the underground but will get an outstanding story about what took place during the war. As the previous post mentioned, you will want to get the audio guide and you will want to bring a jacket. The audio guide is great and will allow you to get the full experience whether on an English or German tour as you can listen to each display in English via the guide. Considering you can get all the beer and whiskey you wish after the tour since all of the underground tours end at the Altstadthof, you can conclude with a good treat (or several). The beer at the Altstadthof is outstanding. Try them all!

We went ahead and booked it - going on 12/18 so I will try to remember to write back! We just are doing the rock-cut cellar one since that is the only one that fits our schedule. :)
