Nurnberg

We are planning to go to Nurnberg after we leave Prague and stay there for a couple of nights and then head to Salzburg for a few nights then to Munich. The more I plan, I am wondering if I should make Nurnberg a day trip from Munich to allow extra time in Munich and/or Salzburg.

Is Nurnberg good for a day trip from Munich or should we stay one or two nights there?

Thanks!

Nürnberg is a very easy day trip from Munich, particularly by rail. Unless you need to visit every museum in the city, one day should be enough.

I am with Isabel: stay a few days in Nürnberg, if not for the city itself, than as a base for some day trips.
I have never understood why Munich is so high on the agenda of foreign visitors. It has its museums and palaces in the vicinity, but as a city I can't find it attractive.

Suzanne,
I vote to spend a couple of nights in Nürnberg as originally planned. Nürnberg has a lovely walkable pedestrian altstadt with many medieval buildings. Many are rebuilt after WW II just like Munich, but still lovely. You can visit the handwerkerhof an artisan souvenir market, gothic churches like Lorenzkirche, and eat some Nürnbergers a small bratwurst.

If you like art you can visit the German National Museum with art from the middle ages to modern times as well as many folk items and a toy museum. They even have recreated Bavarian farmhouse interiors, complete with furniture and artifacts. This is also the home of Albrecht Dürer you can visit his house.

You can visit the Castle and imagine what it was like in an imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. Take in the view of the city from the hill, see a deep well, and have a beer at the Biergarten just behind the castle.

If you are there in the summer they set up a beach on an island on the river that runs through the old town. There are many shops and gelato or Nürnbergers are available on every other corner. I think this great city deserves more than a day, but whatever you decide I hope you have a great trip! Salzburg and Munich are great choices as well.

As others have said, Nuremberg is a great city itself and a terrific travel base town. I like it better than Munich as well for a variety of reasons. From there you have many choices for outings: Bamberg, Iphofen, Wuerzburg, Bayreuth, Bad Windsheim, and others (and since Nuremberg can be a day trip from Munich, MUNICH can be a day trip from Nuremberg as well!

I suggest combining the 2 nights you planned for Nuremberg with your nights in Munich and spend them all in Nuremberg.

Isabel, great photos.
We lived in Augsburg for four years and I visited Nurnberg several time. I have to work out of the Fuerth office. Fuerth is close to Nuremberg and not bombed much in WWII, since it was a Jewish area. Henry Kissinger was from there.

Nuremberg is nice, but many of those townhomes and building in the inner city were destroyed in WWII. Fortunately, they were faithfully reconstructed.

Also, we visited the site of the old N--- rallies SE of the city. They were four sports fields for the US Army then.

Thank you for all the responses - I definitely have a lot to think about and research. The trip report and pictures are great - thank you so much for sharing! If I kept it to the two nights as I originally planned, maybe one day in Nurnberg and another as a day trip from Rothenburg or Bamburg.

Here's a list of things to see in Nurnberg. It's not everything, but I keep adding to it...

The Train Museum
The Toy Museum
The Kunst Quarter
The Stadtpark
Westfriedhof
The Cupernicus Planetarium
Trodelmarkt
Tucherschloss
The Tiergarten
Kristall Palm Beach (not really in your focus, but a lot of fun...)
The Water Gate
Imperial Castle & Gardens
National Germanic Museum
City Walls
Lorenzkirche
Hauptmarkt
Beautiful Fountain (Schonnebrunnen)
Gansemannchen Fountain
St. Giles Church Frauenkirche
Albert Durer House
City Museum (Fembo House)
Tiergarten Tor - Medieval Square Frauntorturn District - half timbered houses
Weibergasse Street
Weinstadel House
Zum Guldenen Stern
Nassauer House
tugenbrunnen Fountain
Museum Bridge
St Sebaldus Kirche
You might also want to check the calendar for the Messecentrum and see if they have a show going on while you are planning on being there. First, because that affects hotel availability and pricing, and second in case it's something you're interested in.

BTW, the Deutsche Bahn museum in Nürnberg... is a little disappointing. This might be a personal preference, but if I visit a rail museum, I want to see actual locomotives and rail cars, not miniature models or mock-ups. The only interesting part of the museum to me were the side-by-side comparison of Ludwig II and Otto von Bismark's personal rail cars. One is a fanciful carriage for a dreamer, the other is a practical mobile office space for a hard-edged realist politician.

Impressive list compiled by @KGC. But instead of

Westfriedhof

I'd rather suggest to see one of the historical cemeteries, either the Johannis Friedhof, where one can see the tomb of Albrecht Dürer (among others, there ist a list at the entrance) or the Rochus Friedhof (i.a. tomb of Johann Pachelbel, the "Canon Pachelbel"). Access to the Johannisfriedhof is by tram No. 6 from the Plärrer square, access to the Rochusfriedhof is easiest on foot also from the Plärrer.

Keep Nurnberg as planned. The time of year would determine a lot towards itinerary, and many highlights would be outside the city (day touring). The Franken area has so much to see.
