Is it practical to consider a stopover, not spend the night, in Nuremburg to see the documentation center and other highlights at the end of September?
By train Frankfurt to Nuremberg is about 3 hours and Nuremberg to Munich is about 1 hour go for it. Just make sure any stuff you don't want to carry around can fit in the locker

Yes, time and distance from Frankfurt to Munich are about the same taking either of the long-distance ICE routes running through Stuttgart or through Nurenburg.
The additional consideration I would add is the timing of your departure from Frankfurt. Is your schedule in Frankfurt such that you can depart and travel to Nurenbeurg with enough time to see the doc center, etc.? If not, please consider a day trip from Munich as an ICE train will get you there in just over an hour.
You should know that the DokuCenter is currently being renovated and enlarged and during this time only a much smaller interim exhibition is available. The site itself is still freely accessible. Leave your luggage in a locker in the basement of the station (there are no storage facilities on site) and take tram #8 from the station square (destination: "Doku-Zentrum").

sla019, your post is great reminder that reading a well-written guidebook and watching a couple of travel videos isn't sufficient planning for a trip. We need to research our planned itineraries to ensure that what we want to see is open and to learn if there are any special events that we want to become part of or avoid.
Thank you all for the quick responses! We are staying next to station in Frankfurt, so very flexible on when to leave. Sounds like Doc Center may not be compelling enough to stop given the remodel. I'll keep researching, but we might just speed our way to Munich!
I was there about 12 days ago. Only one room is open and the day that I was there it was packed with cruise tours. Could not see the exhibits because of the crowds. I would go to the history museum if you stop there instead of the documentation center
Munich's Nazi Documentation center was fascinating and well done I thought. Maybe not quite as good as Nuremberg's when fully open, but I really enjoyed the one in Munich!
From many years' worth of time spent in Nuremberg (10 days this year, so far) I find the Germanische Museum to be the most worthwhile.
