Nuremberg - Worth seeing for a day?

Hello,

I will be travelling to Munich in May with roundtrip airfare out of Munich. The plan now is three nights in Munich upon arrival, three nights in Salzburg, and three nights in Prague. I am debating on whether I should train from Prague to Nuremberg and spend a day/evening in Nuremberg on the way from Prague back to Munich or extend the Prague stay to four nights instead.

I'm guessing we could get to Nuremberg by the afternoon from Prague, so we would basically have 24 hours there (arrival afternoon then depart back to Munich the following afternoon). Is Nuremberg worth checking out for this duration? I am big on WWII history, so I wanted to see some of the famous Nazi sites.

Thanks!

Yep
They have the old Nazi parade grounds unfinished part there and a Nazidocumentation Center museum attached to that. First edition copy of Hitler's autobiography Mein Kampf on display etc.

It is very worth your time to visit Nuremberg, Parade grounds, Nazi sites, war tribunals, etc. The city has been beautifully rebuilt but you would think you are looking at the original buildings.

There are a number of daily direct Bahn Buses from Prague to Nuremberg which takes about 3 1/2 to 4 hours for 15 Euros pp The fast train from Nuremberg to Munich takes about an hour.

Another source is: https://museums.nuernberg.de/nuremberg-municipal-museums/

The Nazi party grounds are easily accessible from the main train station on the surface trams, but they never excited me much. The Documentation Center near the party grounds is very impressive and focuses on how a cultured nation like Germany fell under the sway of the Nazi ideology. If you are in Nuremberg on a weekend you can even visit the Nuremberg Trials courtroom. It is still in use as a courtroom during the week. The Museum in the upper floors of the building is open every day.

Thank you, so I could probably get to Nuremberg from Prague maybe around 1 pm or so and then get back to Munich later on the following evening. The flight out of Munich isn't until two days after the initial arrival in Nuremberg, so I wouldn't have to rush back to Munich on the second day of being in Nuremberg.

You could actually take a train right from Nurnberg to the Munich airport.

Here's a list I've been building of things (other than the WWII stuff) to see in Nuremberg:

The Train Museum
The Toy Museum
The Kunst Quarter
The Stadtpark
Westfriedhof - Cemetary
Johannis Friedhof – Tomb of Albrect Durer
The Cupernicus Planetarium
Trodelmarkt
Tucherschloss
The Tiergarten
Kristall Palm Beach (not really in your focus, but a lot of fun...)
The Water Gate
Imperial Castle & Gardens
National Germanic Museum
City Walls
Lorenzkirche
Hauptmarkt
Beautiful Fountain (Schonnebrunnen)
Gansemannchen Fountain
St. Giles Church Frauenkirche
Albert Durer House
City Museum (Fembo House)
Tiergarten Tor - Medieval Square Frauntorturn District - half timbered houses
Weibergasse Street
Weinstadel House
Zum Guldenen Stern
Nassauer House
tugenbrunnen Fountain
Museum Bridge
St Sebaldus Kirche
You might also want to check the calendar for the Messecentrum and see if they have a show going on while you are planning on being there. First, because that affects hotel availability and pricing, and second in case it's something you're interested in.

Don't miss "Drei im Weckla." I like having a Bier at the Albrecht-Dürer-Platz near the Dürer-Hase (good sun in the morning). Easy to get into the Kaiserburg from there by going through the Tiergärtnertor walking outside the fortress wall and enter from the North by the Hexenhäusle. Other side of the Altstadt... If the Biergarten is open above the Kasemattentor check that out too (Radieschen mit Krustenbrot und Butter). Have a "Schäufele mit Kloß" for dinner.

Thanks everyone! So having about 24 hours there would be enough time to see a decent amount or are things really spread out?

Just walking the old city and hitting/seeing the highlights is fairly easy/doable in the time you have allowed (2 - 1/2 days without long stops/visits). You can catch a Tram near the Main train station to and fro the Dokumentationszentrum Reichsparteitagsgelände. You will have a short walk around the lake to get to the Zeppelinfeld from the Dokumentationszentrum. The Luitpoldhain is across the street from the Dokumentationszentrum too. Nice big Beigarten near the lake also.

Yes, this is enough time. On my last trip to Germany I scheduled a 4 hour stop over in Nuremberg when traveling from Frankfurt to Munich visit the documentation center. I had all day to travel and my Munich appointment wasn't until 5pm so I figured, why not? Of course there is much more to see but even that small stop for one museum was worth it and very easy to do.

As long as your plans don't include more than one or two museums at the most, one day is more than enough to explore the city. Most of the stuff people travel to see sits within or very close to the old center of the city, which is easily walkable. Dutzednteich (the Volkspark that once hosted the parade grounds) is a little bit outside walking distance, but very easy to reach by public transportation. The only things further afield that might hold any tourist interest are the Justizpalast, the zoo and Krystal Palm Beach (a fantastic mostly indoor water park, although there's a much better one close to the Munich airport).

It’s definitely worth a day’s visit if for no other reason than to stroll the city. Even without visiting any museums, there’s plenty to see to occupy a couple days.

If our flight of Munich was at 2:25 pm would that leave enough time to get from Nuremberg to Munich Airport if we left in the AM that morning? Are the trains running pretty consistently?

If it is a transatlantic flight you want to be at Munich airport 3 hours in advance or at 12:25. If it is connecting flight to another city in Europe then 2 hours before The flight or 13.25

Are the trains running pretty consistently?

You can search the train schedule From Nuremburg to Munich Airport. at dbahn for the day you need to travel
https://www.bahn.com/en/view/offers/index.shtml

I don't think any of the trains are direct meaning you would have to change trains. But looking at the schedule it would take 2 to 3 hours max
