Nuremberg to Rothenburg lunch stop

We are picking up a car in Nuremberg around noon (arriving from Prague) and heading to Rothenburg. Does anyone know of a quaint little town on the way to stop for lunch and maybe visit for a couple of hours. Nothing fancy, no museums, just for a relaxing break in the day.

If you are coming over from Prague on the Bahn IC bus, it only takes 1½ longer to go on to Rothenburg by train. And you don't have to take time picking up the car. If you are getting Savings Fare tickets for the bus from Prague, it's only about 5-10€ more (less than the cost of gas) to add the train to Rothenburg.

By the time you get the car and drive to Bad Windsheim (1h07m per ViaMichelin), you could already be having lunch in Rothenburg.

And, if you take the route from Nürnberg to Rothenburg via Neustadt, you could still stop in Bad Windsheim (53 minutes from Nürnberg) on the way for lunch.

If you are coming by train and using a Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket for Pilsen to Nürnberg or a Bayern-Ticket for Furth im Wald to Nürnberg, then Nürnberg to Rothenburg is already covered.

If you already have your ticket from Prague to Nürnberg, a VGN Tagesticket Plus, for 18€, will cover your transportation to Rothenburg.

I recall from earlier posts that Charlotte's husband is driving this bit just for the experience of driving.

So he goes to the best in Europe for public transportation to experience driving?

I get to experience driving in this country every day (yawn). What I can't experience much of in this country is train travel. That's one of the things that makes Germany so much fun.

It's also the best country in the world for driving, in certain areas at least. The stretch of Autobahn along A6 and A7 between Nürnberg and Rothenburg odT provides some great chances for the type of speed that you can't get anywhere else, except on a racetrack.

Wow-
Thanks Laura for remembering us!

Lee, I know the train might be cheaper, more efficient, etc. but it is a bucket list type of thing to drive on the autobahn.

Tom, Thanks for your tip re: A6 and A7. We have never been to Germany so everything is new to us.

This might be fun to dink around with during your preparations: Highways in Germany from Highwaymaps.eu. According to it, there is no direct autobahn route to Rothenburg ODT from Nuremberg via the little town suggested for lunch. There are ways you can drive on E50, A3 and A7/E43 for that experience, but note that there is a speed limit these days and it will be a circle route.

My husband, the hobby race car driver, enjoyed the backroads as much as the autobahn driving. To go fast with no speed limit, he rented a specially prepared car and drove the Nurburgring. That's up near Koblenz. You can't drive a normal rental car on it.

This little Rome2rio search shows the shortest route from Nuremberg to Rothenburg ODT. Click on the "Drive" part to see the route. It only takes about an hour, so I hope you do get to spend more time on the roads than that for the price of your rental.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out Gemut.com for information on driving in Europe, especially Germany. Read the brochure, What you should know about renting a car in Europe in 2015, thoroughly before you go.
