I'm coming from Munich prob 0800 ICE and return later afternoon. Nazi sites a must. Any suggestions on time needed in Numberg itself to see these (maybe only Documenttion ctr and Rally grounds. Also a lite of the old town if enough time.
Also include the Palace of Justice where the war crime trials were held.
Nürnberg is not just nazi sites. It was one of the most important city states of the Holy Roman Empire and despite much destruction by bombing, many historical sites are preserved or have been reconstructed. And it has a very important museum. I'd divide my time between the well-done nazi documentation center and the historical city (the rally grounds are not worth it, they were never finished and in spite of what tour guides like to tell you, Hitlers speeches were delivered at a different place, viz. in the nearby Luitpoldhain). The Docu Center is accessible by tram #8 from the train station.
We took a day trip from Munich to Nuremberg in 2015 to see Nazi sites. To make the most of our time, we hired Tour Guide Kevin, and saw the Luitpold Arena, Congress Hall, Rally Grounds, and the Palace of Justice. We did not see the Documentation Center; but we had time for some Franconian sausage and beer, and a stroll through the old town before taking the train back to Nuremberg.
The Documentation center is probably a 2.5-3 hour visit. Rally grounds twenty minutes or so. For me the German National Museum was a highlight.
For me I chose to visit the courthouse where the trials were held. Even tough it has been remodeled, just sitting in there was very moving.. It is not always open during the week since it is still in use. Ask locally at the Tourist Information Center if it is open when you are there. The attached museum is very worthwhile too.
and the old town is very pleasant.
Nazi sites a must.
Go to the web site named "thirdreichruins". It has photos taken before, during, and after WWII and photos of the same places take much later during the century.
I did Nuremberg by train from Munich last May, arrived around 9 am and got on a tram out to the Documentationzentrum straight away and did the audio tour, interrupted about 3/4 of the way through by alarms and dire announcements to vacate the building immediately, fire trucks and police outside, never did find out what had happened and decided to wander along the lake and out to see the rally grounds before heading to old town for a delicious lunch at the Literaturhaus--full of locals, very cozy to sit and relax a bit. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the old town even though it was a drizzly day, from the handwerkerhof just inside the gate to the beautiful churches, toured the Albrecht Durer haus and the wonderful toy (spielzeug) museum, shopped a bit, had coffee and a snack before catching the train back to Munich around 5:30 pm. I would have liked to tour the castle but was not moving at my usual fast pace due to my back going out in spectacular fashion.
