Nude mixed spa experience near Hamburg

Hello everyone

My wife I and are going on an extended weekend to Hamburg in December.

We are looking for a recommandation for a spa in the area. We were in Harz this summer in tried the Sole-There thermal baths in Bad-Harzburg and really enjoined the possibility of getting the sauna experience together - even though we had to be naked (first time for us, we are from Denmark).

We are looking for a spa experience like that - could be at a hotel were we stay, but it is not a must. My wife is 35 and I am 39 years old and (especially for me wife) I think it would be more naturally if not 80% of all people were over 65 and there were more women around her age.

Are there any spas near Hamburg where "younger" people typically attend? Any time of the day that are better than other?

And we really prefer that there are no optional clothing on/off (we have heard that several spas is offering this because of Danes).

I cannot speak directly to Hamburg, but have been to baths/spas in several German cities, and have given up trying to "guess" the crowd. Yes, many places are therapy for the old folks; but even those places can change if you choose to go in the evening as opposed to the daytime, when you get a more diverse crowd. Other places that are holiday spots for Germans, will always have a diverse crowd of all ages, but that may not apply to Hamburg. I guess if I were to go looking, I would consider:

  • Going in the evening (more working age people)
  • Going to a place that advertises as adult only (rules out family swims and waterparks)
  • Maybe shy away from places specifically labeled as a Hamam, still investigate, but those tend to be more traditional and have more segregation of sexes.
  • If you narrow it down to a few, call and ask questions, I usually will do so when going to a new place just to get a feel for rules and expectations, as well as features.

As for clothing optional, I believe some of the places I have been offered the option to wear something, but I never recall seeing anyone who ever did. Of course the modern baths in Baden-Baden are clothed in the main pools, but that is more tourist attraction than German Bath.

Just curious, but why does the age of the other people matter? (Serious question.)

I can't speak for the OP, but myself, I have been to a bath, went in, and we were the only people in the crowd under 70. While it did not detract too much from the experience, we certainly felt as though we were in the wrong place, or at least the looks we thought we got were a bit "What are you doing here?"

I think I would have the same thoughts if I wandered in and it was all superfit 20 somethings, all men or women, or any place that caters to a specific group. I do not think it unusual at all to seek a place that attracts a diverse crowd.

Maybe it’s because we did not grow up with FKK? Maybe it’s because she feels more comfortable not being the only female around 35 (the rest being 65+). Maybe it’s in our human nature to seek to blend in, when we get a little out of our comfort zone.

Why are you judging? We just wan’t to be comfortable and get an even better experience the next time 😉

Who knows, in 10 times we might not have any issues 😄

rick1rick, I wasn't judging; I was genuinely curious. I'm sorry if I came across negatively; that was certainly not my intention.

And I had to look up FKK, so thank you for a new word.

I myself would be uncomfortable in a "clothing optional" environment, regardless of who the other participants were. But that's me. No judging.

Many things are nowadays being called FKK that really aren't, like topless sunbathing, or certain night club advertisements.

FKK ("Freikörperkultur") actually was a sort of movement, and the point was that this is just a natural thing, and there shouldn't be any staring or more-than-usual sexual attraction involved. (Personally, I am not convinced that this takes into account human nature, but that's a different matter. :-) )

Those spas aren't usually called FKK, to the best of my knowledge, but basically the idea is the same: There shouldn't be any undue staring or sexual attraction. So the age of the spa visitors theoretically shouldn't matter any more or less than if you were fully dressed. :-)
