north of garmish

We are spending two days in Garnish to unwind from Octoberfest. We have five days to work our way by train to Frankfurter for flight home. We are about citied out. Any suggestions for small towns reachable by train.. to stay on our way to Frankfurt? Thanks

Here's a few ideas, although some are closer to Frankfurt than Garmisch:

Schwäbisch Hall

The Neckar River valley between Bad Wimpfen and Heidelberg

The Bergstaße between Heidelberg and Darmstadt, particularly Weinheim and Heppenheim.

Landshut

Ochsenhausen

Babenhausen

Ottobeuren

Coburg (Best castle in Germany, in my opinion).

Miltenberg - If you're up for some hiking, there's some roman ruins buried in the woods in the mountains above the town.

Erbach, Michelstadt, and Lindenfels in the Odenwald region.

That should be enough to get you started..

Here are some fine small towns heading north toward Würzburg where you can see some history and get a feel for small town life:
Nördlingen, old town with fortified wall and "Wehrgang" on the Romantic Road.
Wall
Also with interesting buildings and carved architectural details

Bad Windsheim with its amazing Freilandmuseum, a collection of relocated buildings from around the region.
Freilandmuseum info.

The walled town of Ochsenfurt, quite close to Würzburg on the Main River, with its fine half-timbered buildings and towers.
