Nördlingen, Ulm & Landsberg Restaurants.

We have revised some earlier plans and will be heading to southern Germany again this April. We are going to visit 3 new towns for part of the time: Nördlingen, Ulm and Landsberg am Lech. I like to take the names/addresses of a few restaurants in my phone (in addition to my hotel address) for directions.

There are plenty of websites of unsolicited reviews of restaurants and I have checked them. Unfortunately, I have had the experience that it is a bit too easy for a business to stuff the ballot box on a site like Yelp. I usually like good food at reasonable price; atmosphere is a secondary issue. Anybody have recommendations for any of these towns?

Thanks for any suggestions.

No suggestions but a congratulations on the towns you have chosen.

Nördlingen is one of my favs. the wall walk is fun.

When you get to Ulm, check out adjacent Neu-Ulm in Bavaria too.

Hi Gary,

I've eaten in all three towns.

Ulm: 2002, just passing through, climbed the church tower, later had an afternoon snack at some sidewalk cafe we passed by.

Nördlingen: 2007, stayed overnight in a gasthof (Zum Engel) with big restaurant and a few rooms next to one of the gates, had dinner there shortly after arriving, lunch the next day before leaving. Would recommend it except Google says it is permanently closed. However, the owners appear to have a new place, Wengers Brettl, within the town wall. Based on my satisfaction with their former establishment, I would recommend the new place. If you are looking for a place to stay, they also have rooms. They don't give the price on the website; you'll have to email Uli for that.

Landsberg am Lech: 2007, stayed at Augsburgerhof. There are a number of restaurant around the town square (Hauptplatz). I just looked around and picked one, Mohren, it was fine, but I didn't compare it to others.

BTW, where are you staying? Booking websites don't list many places actually in Landsberg. I found Augsburgerhof on the Landsburg town website. I had a nice room, and, as I recall, a big bathroom. Hotel is "garni" (only breakfast).

I rarely ask for recommendations or use guidebooks, preferring to roam the neighborhood around my accommodations looking at posted menus.

Thanks for replying Lee. I have made note of the Wengers Brettl.

Like yourself, we often just wander the town and read menus. I sometimes drive my wife crazy doing that. In a lot of towns many restaurants have gone over to sushi, Mexican, Chinese, etc. I like all these ethnic foods in the USA but really prefer local food in Germany. I find that it helps to have a few German restaurants on my phone just in case.

I do use HRS.com to find hotels. I have found that the level and accuracy of information plus the standard format is very useful to me. And, it is easier to change reservations if I need do so. I am not adverse to using guides like Rick Steves or referrals from here. We are returning to the Raidel in Rothenburg, which was a recommendation of both Rick and you. I already had the link to the Augsburgerhof, which I believe came from you.

Thanks again.
