Night activities in Nuremberg and Munich that aren't bar related...

My husband and I will be traveling southern Germany next week and stops will include both Munich and Nuremberg. Both of us no longer are in the bar/nightclub era of life (he's sober, I rarely drink more than one) so we're looking for evening activities beyond a late dinner that may be fun to do. Would anyone have some suggestions? It would be greatly appreciated...

Well, if you walk along the old city wall of Nuremberg between the Frauenturm and the Spittalturm you'll go right thru the red light district. But one of the more photogenic walks in the evening is the path along the Pegnitz River that goes thru the middle of the old town. You can walk both banks (with some detours) from the water gate to the Whorder See. You might also enjoy the Planetarium (just outside the Spittalturm) which has regular shows and events.

In Munich you'll find crowds sitting outside the restaurants and bars on the sidewalks if the weather's good. There are a lot of music students in the city and they come out and play in the streets for tips. There are also the Jazz cellars (which feature other types of music too). You don't have to imbibe alcohol to keep a seat, but should order something.

Both cities have the usual movies, theaters, opera, and casinos.

Munich has one of the best opera companies in the world. See what's on while you are there. The prices are reasonable compared to many US theaters.

Biergartens in the summer are really lovely and there is no requirement that you drink alcohol. You can get a radler (beer and sprite) or a sauer radler (beer and sparkling water) and he can get a saftschorle (fruit juice mixed with sparkling water) and enjoy the atmosphere. Especially in Munich, there are so many wonderful biergartens to visit and the atmosphere is more about socializing under the trees and enjoying the precious summertime weather than on getting hammered.
