Hello,
My brother is landing very early at the Munich Airport. We wanted to find a "gemutlich" restaurant to begin his first visit to Germany. We will be heading to Dachau for an early visit. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
There are any number of bakeries and cafes near Dachau. I have not eaten at any of them, but they should be easy to find. I just searched for Dachau on Google then searched under the nearby tab for Bäckerei and Cafe and found six or seven of them. I pulled one up that had good reviews on Google called Cafe Zimtstern and it looked like something you might be interested in. They have a breakfast buffet with fruit, bread, eggs, cheese, muesli, jam, wurst and so on, starting at 8 am every morning (they open at 7 am). They also offer a number of breakfast items a la carte.
The address for the cafe is Schillerstraße 33, 85221 Dachau, which is about 5-6 minutes from the camp. Website is at http://www.cafe-zimtstern.de/cafe_zimtstern_fruehstueckskarte.html
If you don't like that one, there are plenty of others. :)
How early is he arriving? What will he be doing with his luggage while he visits Dachau? How is he getting to Dachau?
I've been there 3 times, all by train from Munich. I remember seeing a cafe in the area of the Dachau train station. I wouldn't call it cozy and I have no clue as to how early it opened.
As for German breakfasts in general, they are usually more like what Americans would think of as lunch with breads, sliced meats, cheeses and boiled eggs. The coffee is usually good. The other kind of café morning fare is sweets, especially served in a coffee and tea shop/bakery.
I lived and traveled in Germany for 3 years. I can't remember a time that I ate breakfast in a public restaurant very early in the morning. A breakfast like I described was always served in the hotels or B&Bs where I stayed.
You don't say when he's going, so the Covid situation may or may not affect what's open. His best bet may be to get something at the airport or train station to be sure he wakes up for his visit. It might not be cozy, but it will be practical.
Trip Advisor has this list of restaurants in Dachau that serve some kind of frühstück with their hours and locations: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g315834-zfp2-Dachau_Upper_Bavaria_Bavaria.html
Maybe y'all can pick something from that list. And I hope someone reads German.
@mardee - Thanks so much! It looks perfect for a nice breakfast! I rely on TripAdvisor to find cafes/restaurants and there were no reviews for this particular cafe. Thanks so much for letting me know about it. I appreciate you taking the time to find a great place. Best to you.
@lo - I know, going out to breakfast is not common, but I think there are a few nice cafes that are open early. We will pick my brother up at the airport around 7:15 and drive a half hour to Dachau. Thank you for the TripAdvisor link - I looked again and found Cafe Samstagskinder on Wieninger Straße 3. They open at 9:00AM. But Mardee, from this group, found a cafe that opens at 8:00AM. So between the two we're are guaranteed a good breakfast! Thanks for you help!
@Tweets55, actually the cafe I mentioned opens at 7 am but doesn't start serving the breakfast till 8 (according to their website). So if you get there early, you might be able to get some coffee while you wait. 🙂
@Mardee - Thank you for that reminder - that's even better!! Thank you again for finding it!!
Breakfast in Germany appears to be a hot topic! There's another discussion on the forum about it. Here's the link to "Is hotel breakfast essential in Munich?" in case you haven't seen it: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/germany-reviews/is-hotel-breakfast-essential-in-munich
@Lo - Thank you, I hadn't seen it!! I appreciate it.
