New travel to Germany

We will be traveling to Munich in September 2025. We have 10 days. We are not renting a car. Any suggestions for travel in Germany and other nearby countries?

If you are going during Oktoberfest, get your hotel reservations early. Suggestions for outside Munich would be Salzburg and Rothenburg ob de Tauber. Both Salzburg and Rothenburg should be at least an overnight trip. If you have enough time in Salzburg, you could do a day trip to the Salzkammergut.

You mean day trips? Or near by places for a night or 2? What are the ages of the people with you?

Dachau Concentration Camp is a 20 min train ride away. Munich and that area is Hitler territory - if you've never been to a Concentration Camp - you should go. If you want a tour - we love BigHatTours - he does a great job.

Regenensburg would be a good day trip, but also a good 2 night trip.

Salzburg is worth 2-3 days, more than that if you want to do Eagle's Nest and a Salt Mine.

Nuremberg is also a great 2 night trip.

Tons to see and do in Munich too.

I highly recommend that you visit Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest.
We loved Salzburg.
Will you include Berlin?
Include Dachau if you haven’t previously visited another concentration camp.
Skip Neuschwanstein.
How many are traveling with you?
Who is “we.”
Consider a car rental.

Sorry, I should have added some more information. We are traveling with about 12 or more friends and family. Mostly 50-60’s but some in their 20-30’s. We may go off on some separate location from each other. Will most likely get a eurail pass. At least a few days in Germany and then possibly Austria and/or Prague. My husband wants to go to Krakow but we haven’t looked into travel time. We are hoping to go early September before Ocroberfest.

Munich to Krakow is 1 hour, 20 minutes. You fly.

Don't get a Eurail Pass, get either the Bayern Pass or the Deutschland Ticket. Those will get you to all the places you mention except Prague, and you can get close and then just buy one direct ticket. They also allow you to use the trams and busses.

I'd seriously consider renting 2-3 apartments vs trying to find hotels for that many people.

10 days is not much for 3 destinations in which you can spend easily 7-10 days to get a taste only. So, it will be likely Bavaria only, not other parts of Germany.

Interests are still not mentioned.

Lookup train connections in / from / to Germany by DB journey planner: https://int.bahn.de/en/

Hint: from Regensburg there is a direct train connection (4 hrs) to Prague. So, 1 logical stop imo.

Tip: Search for "top 11 best places Bavaria" and create a Doodle poll for your travel group.

if you only have 10 days, I'd stick to 2, maybe 3 places. Changing towns and taking the train takes up LOTS of time.

When you say 10 days, it that 10 full days or does that 10 days include the day you arrive and depart? For such a short time, you won't need EuroRail. Just buy tickets on bahn website. The website seat61.com is extremely helpful with all things on trains - how to book, etc.

As has been suggested, the group needs to dig a little into ideas, interests and perspectives. Then make definitive plans for what the group, sub-groups or individals will do. If 12 people plan to kinda wing it on the trip, on some days 11 will be disapointed. Also, plan well ahead for dinner for 12.

If I didn't have a beach trip planned for early September I'd ask to tag along...

Also, consider Garmish/Fussen with all is castles and the Zugspitze (highest mountain in Germany).
Berchtesgaden (Eagles Nest) and Salzburg.
