Neushwanstein Castle accessibility

I hope to visit Neushwanstein Castle in December, but I'm concerned about accessibility. Apparently, the walk to the castle is 450 meters (just over 1/4 mile) and then there are many steps in the castle. I am a senior with some balance issues and limited stamina. Is there any hope for me to see the castle interior? Has anyone in my situation done this successfully?

The website says that "verification" is needed to make special arrangements for using the elevator, which admits one person per hour. Is my US handicapped car card sufficient, or would I need something else?

I don't want to ruin the day for my travel companions, who are younger and much more fit than I am. Is there somewhere nearby where for me to visit while they tour the castle?
