Question for you Bavarian experts: how crowded us Neuschwanstein likely to be in the days leading up to Christmas? We have seen it in summer and followed RS logic of being there first-thing to avoid the crowds. Is that really necessary Christmas week?
We were there on Dec. 27. We got there first thing and had no problem. After we were done, I noticed there was a very long line at the ticket booth.
If you reserve your tickets in advance, then it won't matter.
Christmas week sees a an uptick in visitors over the usual low winter baseline, but it's nothing compared to the summer. You shouldn't have to wait more than an hour or so after buying your tickets.
One recent change is that they have opened a museum dedicated to the history of the Wittelsbach family (the Bavarian royals). Unlike the castles, this museum does not have pre-determined entry times, so you can stroll through while waiting for your castle tour.
