Neuschwanstein-How much time?

How much time should I budget to do both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles? Choosing between the Tagelbahn luge and Zugspitze, which would you do with 2 teenagers?

It took us 3 or 4 hours to tour both castles when we went including the walk up to Neuschwanstein. There were 6 of us- husband, myself, my parents and 2 teen(at the time) daughters. We took the tram up to Zugspitze but I'll bet the kids would have prefered the luge, I don't believe it wasn't open at the time of our visit during April school vacation.

Do you mean Tegelberg (I think?) luge? You aren't thinking of zugspitze one same day as castle are you?

We did the mikes bikes bus bavaria tour and it was great! We took the bus there with interesting video. Fun bike ride, kids put their feet in the alpine lake, lunch, Tegelberg luge - super fun! Kids (9 and 11) rode 3 times, my husband and I twice, though honestly I would have done more! Then we did the castle tour. A really fun day!!

That was my thought (on the luge). We're doing Berchtesgaden the day prior, so we'll have had our ample supply of Alps.

Just observing that Berchtesgaden to Füssen is a 3-4 hours drive or a 6-7 hours train transfer. Check if you are not planning too tight.

Hi,

Are you staying overnight in the Fuessen area?

I'd say 3 to 4 hours for the castle's is about right. We visited Hohenschwangau first, then took the shuttle bus up to Marienbrucke (Mary's Bridge) and walked down hill to Neuschwanstein. You either want to be at the castles before 8:30am or book the tours/tickets in advance. Neuschwanstein can get very crowded and tours do sell out.

Tegelberg is only about a mile or so from the castles. You can do both the luge (actually called a Sommerrodelbahn) and the cable car or either one separately. FYI: I doubt anyone will ride the luge just once. You can buy a "pass" for multiple rides cheaper than a bunch of individual rides.

If you're interested, there are a couple of Sommerrodelbahns by Berchtesgaden:

We're driving to Fussen the prior evening after spending a day in Berchtesgaden. We'll be in Fussen that whole day.
