Hi all. Everyone on here has been so helpful so I thought I’d ask about this topic too. We are planning a day trip to the castles from Munich and I think I have a ll of the logistics worked out. My only remaining question is should we reserve the package to tour both castles? I have read reviews that seem to indicate that the tour of Hohenschwangu is the better of the two and that we might better better off skipping the tour of Neuschwanstien and just viewing that from the outside. It seems obvious that Neuschwantien is a must see from the outside for the views but I’m not sure about the actual tour of the interior. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you!
The tour of Neuschwanstein is relatively short compared to the time getting there in advance for the tickets and waiting for your tour slot. But if you want to fully experience the wacky world of King Ludwig and his Wagnerian fantasies, you should take the inside tour.
I agree with Sam. Hohenschwangau is the more historically interesting of the 2. But it lays the groundwork for what came after: Neuschwanstein. If you buy your tickets in advance, you might as well see both. Cynics poo poo it because it isn't a real castle. But it is still sight to see- pure self indulgence and theatre, built for one.
Agreeing with both previous posters. To add, the views from Mary's Bridge (relatively short hike behind Neuschwanstein) are awesome. I preferred Hohenschwangau but am happy I visited (inside and outside) both.
