Can we visit Neuschwanstein Castle without making a tour reservation a couple days before? Can we just show up and take a tour that day in the afternoon?
Absolutely. It's one of those travel urban legends that you have to reserve your tickets. In four years of living in Germany, I took guests to the castles quite frequently. Even in July, showing up mid-morning, they were always able to get tickets and never had to wait longer than 90 minutes.
I agree with Tom. We never booked ahead when taking visitors to the castle. We typically arrived by car from Munich before noon and booked something for the afternoon right after lunch. I would recommend touring both Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein if you have the time.

Depends on the time of the year.
I've visited Neuschwanstein twice and Hohenschwangau once by just walking up and getting tickets.
I was passing through Füssen once and went to Hohenschwangau (the town) to take pictures of the route from the bus stop to the ticket kiosk for my website. The line at the kiosk was not long. This was about September 1st.
But, I was traveling through Hohenschwangau a couple of years ago, on the last Saturday of Oktoberfest. I thought everyone would be in Munich, at the fest. So wrong. The place was packed. There were more people in line outside the kiosk than inside. It was just after noon, and they were already booking tours for after 4 o'clock!
Thanks for the answers. I'm going to go ahead and show up that day and see how the tickets are upon our arrival.
