Neuschwanstein Castle or Schloss Nymphenburg

I saw in a review for a tour the castle was recently undergoing work with scaffolding up in some rooms on the tour. Is this still ongoing?

I ask because I am debating whether to visit Neuschwanstein Castle. I saw toward the bottom of a previous thread a suggestion to visit Pilgrimage Church of Wies on the way, have lunch there, then head onward to the Castle which does sound like a nice day. If it is under significant scaffolding I'll probably go see Schloss Nymphenburg that day instead. I'm thinking we could visit Schloss Nymphenburg in the morning, have lunch, and go to Dachau in the afternoon possibly.

I can't answer your question, but I think everyone who visits Germany or Austria should see a concentration camp. We've been to Dachau twice and we are taking friends there this December when we go to the Xmas Markets.

The money shot is the outside of the castle and the beautiful countryside, so yes a lovely day. The inside isn't all that interesting; scaffolding or not. It was mostly empty when we were there as they were doing renovations back in 2017. Probably scaffolding is still related to that It's probably a long process to repair a castle.

My vote is for Nymphenburg hands down. I've been to both and Nymphenburg was a great experience. Easy to get to with a 10 minute tram ride from the central station and an authentic residence complex vs. one that resembles a movie set. The grounds are lovely to wander around and don't miss some of the outlying buildings.

You could do both Nymphenburg and Dachau in the same day. It is not that far. I think we took s2 line and then a taxi on the way there and then the bus back to the S2 station on the way back. I think each person will respond to Dachau in his/her own way. I needed breaks. There is a lot of walking involved, but it was the emotional impact that took a toll on me. Expect that you probably aren't going to want to do something festive afterwards.

Thanks, all! I've decided we'll utilize that day to visit Schloss Nymphenburg and Dachau after all. It will make the next day easier to manage if we stay in Munich rather than try to go to Dachau before taking an afternoon train to Nurnberg to meet up with friends.

Are you taking a Dachau tour originating from Munich, such as a Radius tour, or going to the Memorial Camp and hoping to sign up with one of the English tours the Memorial Camp offers?
Thanks.
