We will be staying in Garmisch for 3 nights and plan to visit the Neuschwanstein castle and Oberammergau area on Friday Aug 26. We have a car so have some flexibility on tour timing. I understand I can go online now and book our tour time. Are we best to try to book at 10am tour or say maybe a 4pm tour - will the late afternoon be less busy in the area (ie. will most tour buses be gone by this time) or is it crowded all day? Is there such thing as a "rush hour" to avoid on the roads between Garmisch, Oberammergau and Fussen? Thanks
We went in morning on one day and afternoon on another, and I did not see much difference. It was very crowded both times!
Parking in one of the lots was easy for both times though, I think they have a lot of parking. We were staying in Oberammergau, and the road we took was not crowded driving at any of the times we were on it.
Make sure you stop at the church in Wies (Wieskirche) if you have about an hour to spare. It's not far off the road between the castle and Oberammergau, and it is worth the stop.
If you're going to pre-book tickets online, you have to do it, I think 48 hours ahead, double check me. You can't do it day before, which is what we tried, and learned we couldn't. So we had to wait in the ticket line, and it's sloooooow. You wouldn't think "hi two tickets, ok, that's 20 euro, here's my card, here's your tickets, thank you!" could be so slooooooow. But it is. If you pre-book and can print them, you can just go right up to the castle and avoid that mess. Please make sure, though!
Have fun, it's a really cool place, and the view from up there is amazing.
Don't forget the monastery in very nearby Ettal (less than 4 km from Oberammergau). If you love the Wieskirche (which I did), you'll certainly appreciate Ettal.
I love Ettal, and t is very convenient.
When I was there it was insanely crowded. I suggest to visit the Konigsee . The castle while beautiful seemed to me now like a item checked off and never again. The lake I would go back over and over if I had the chance. http://www.schloesser.bayern.de/deutsch/schloss/objekte/koe_bart.htm
