Neuschwanstein and Liechtenstein

My family (husband, 18 & 15 yo daughters & I) will be staying in Munich the first week in July. We are planning to rent a car and drive to Neuschwanstein. The castles, scenery, and alpine slide sound fabulous. We are considering driving to Liechtenstein (once in a lifetime novel experience). Should we stay overnight in Hohenschwangau? Any suggestions?

Hi,

We've been to and even stayed in Liechtenstein. Just to have a novel experience? I wouldn't bother. I would stay in the area anyway. We liked Fuessen enough that we stayed there on two different trips. Add doing the Zugspitze trip along with the castles, luge ride, etc.

Just wanted to add that I'm not knocking Liechtenstein. Unless there's something you really want to see there, it's just more of the same... beautiful scenery and alpine vistas similar to Bavaria and Austria. To go just to say you've been there, that's a waste of precious vacation time.

Yeah, Liechtenstein... nothing wrong with it, but other than different license plates, it's indistinguishable from the neighboring regions of Switzerland and Austria. And other than one castle at the southern end of the country, there really isn't much for tourists except tax-free shopping.

Now, nearby Lindau and the Bodensee.... those are worth driving out of your way to see, especially on a clear day.

Liechtenstein is over 2 hours from Füssen by road (2h03, 164Km, Füssen to Vaduz, according to www.viamichelin.com ). A circuitous and slow route because there are mountains in the way!
Liechtenstein is nothing special, apart from it's political status. There are lots of better drives:

  • Take the scenic road via Reutte and Lermoos to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Optionally take a trip up the Zugspitze.
  • Take the scenic road via Sonthofen to Oberstdorf. Spen an hour there, or further up the Kleinwalsertal (a side valley).
