Neuschuanstein or Romantic Road

I'm spending three days in Munich after a 10 day guided tour. I wanted to take a day trip and was looking for feedback on which of these trips you would recommend. Looking to see if any one has any input on doing one over the other.
Thanks

IMO, the Romantic Road is not a candidate for a "day trip". There is at least one tour (Romantic Road Coach) that does the trip, one way, in a day, but you don't get to spend enough time in the towns to make it worthwhile, and it's not "The Road" that is interesting, it's the towns.

I'd go to Regensburg. Plenty of old, half-timbered houses, a gorgeous cathedral, the Thurn & Taxis palace, plus Roman ruins to complete the day. We really enjoyed our day here, but we were on a private tour with Taff Simon of Dark History Tours based out of Munich. https://dark-history.eu/

My wife and I did both the Romantic Road and the castles in November. King Ludwig's castles are much closer to Munich and iconic. To me, they are a must for any trip to the area. It is also a lot easier to see the castles if you are carless. It would be hard to do the main sites along the Romantic Road with your base of Munich. Rothenburg is the biggest and was our favorite, but would be 5 hours round trip from Munich. We spent an entire day along the trail (not even including 2 full days in Rothenburg) and still did not have enough time to see the smaller towns and villages along the way.

With only three days in Munich, you could do the castles early and be back for a little more time in Munich as well.

We also used Taff as from Dark History tours. It was honestly our favorite day of our 17 day trip. It was the perfect mixture of history and culture all with frequent stops at hidden pubs and insider tips. It was the perfect day.
