Need recommendation for place to stay in Munich

We will be staying in Munich for 3 night s (3 adults) in July. We don't know anything about where to stay - but do know it needs to be close to the subway line as we travel from and back to the airport. We hope to find a decent place to stay where we can take public transportation to other areas - town center, longer day trips around Munich.

Don't need a fancy hotel. But need it to be easy access to transportation. Thank you in advance!

Hotel Schlicker or Hotel Platzl. Both a one minute walk from Marienplatz and very close to subway. They are basically across the street from each other. I think Schlicker may be cheaper & incl breakfast - both excellent

Public transportation in Munich is pretty dense, which is to say, it covers the city well.

So the "subway line" is actually multiple lines, so starting by looking at the map and
getting a feel for the layout is a start.

As is the case in many European cities, there are plenty of hotels near the main train
station, and they tend to be mid-level or maybe a bit lower.

A bit away from there around Marienplatz/Old Town is where there are more upscale
hotels.

The Ostbahnhof station is also a major transport hub and so there are many hotels
around there as well.

This is what Google Maps was made for, amongst other things.

Yes, we have been using Google maps to check on locations for hotels or gausthauses. However, we don't know the best areas of town to stay in or if there is anything we should avoid. Travel newbies here! That is why we are asking this question and hoping there is something that stands out for other travelers or something you would recommend so our stay is a good one!

Marienplatz is the heart of the old town. It's where we like to stay. There is a train/subway here also. Lots to see and do in this area - great old cathedrals, amazing architecture, the famous outdoor beer garden - Viktualienmarkt is here. We like Hotel Schlicker or Platzl as I mentioned above. We also love to book a day trip to Dachau Concentration Camp and a Third Reich Tour in Munich.

With only three days, a good guidebook will be invaluable in assuring you get the maximum value for your time there. The Rick Steves guidebooks always give a rundown on the best neighborhoods to stay in, plus recommend lodging. Guidebooks from other publishers do the same. You can test drive by getting a copy from your local library first. And you will find many videos on YouTube covering the various areas of the city.

We just got back from a Rick Steves tour which included Munich. We stayed at the Hotel Excelsior by Geisel. It is an executive style hotel located 5 walking minutes from the central train station (HBF), and about 10 minutes from Marienplatz & the Old Town center. Nice rooms, good customer service and offers an excellent breakfast. Ask for a room which doesn't face the street though, as there is a bar a few doors down from the hotel entrance. We slept with the window open one night, and you could hear the drunks yelling at one another.

I don't know why RS Tours is still stopping near Munich Central Station. And I certainly wouldn't recommend a hotel on Schützenstraße. But we've had this discussion here several times :-) As long as the construction site at the main station is there and the large department store is empty, just stay away (only talking about hotel). The empty department store has since become an unofficial shelter for the homeless and drug addicts, including dealers. You may not notice it right away, but the Munich police also report that this is the case.

Big fan of Motel One and they have several locations in Munich. Large, comfy beds and great showers.

Two places that we have stayed with 3 adults are the Hotel Lux and the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt. Both rooms were triples and had plenty of space for 3 ladies. Location of both was excellent as they are very close to Marienplatz. We had stayed at the HAV once before as well. The Lux does not have a lift, if that matters. Both have breakfast, but the one at the Lux was especially nice. Fantastic cappuccino's as well;) My personal preference between the two is the Lux, but I have no complaints about either one. Our most recent stay at these was Dec. 2022.

I met a couple in Munich who were staying in Hotel am Viktualienmarkt in Marienplatz and loved it.

If you all didn't want to share a hotel room than I'd go with the Motel One branches. I stayed at the one in Sendlinger Tor and was more than pleased. Not luxurious but good enough for those who aren't fussy about amenities.

I like Hotel Gastoff Maisberger. Literally at the S1 stop at Neufahrn. Not in Central Munich, but we found that we liked this. The rooms are incredibly spacious, the restaurant amazing, and just 10 minutes from the airport making it great for arrival or departure. The price was good and we enjoyed the ride into the center and back

I never stay in Munich. I think the last time I did was in the early 80's when I was travelling on business with a colleague whose Admin had made our travel arrangements. We arrived at the hotel late after a drive from Frankfurt to learn that they accepted only cash. That was interesting. There were 4 of us looking for a room on zero notice. I never let anyone make my travel plans for me after that.
Like most German cities, the transportation around the city is excellent. That makes staying out of the city center (for me) a much better choice. I am not wild about the typical city center business.
Last fall my wife and I stayed in nearby FeldKirchen at the Bauer. The local bus stopped literally right in front of our hotel. From the bus we would take the S-Bahn wherever we wanted to go. I plan to the same next time we visit.

Feldkirchen at the Bauer

I live in the east of Munich, and Feldkirchen is a 15-minute drive (by car) away from my home. We actually go to the Hotel Bauer for dinner every now and then, and we've never been disappointed.

But otherwise, unlike you, I prefer to be in the center of the action on vacation. Okay, maybe a few miles off, but certainly not farther away :-) :-)

I've been staying at the Bauer for years. The breakfasts are still good, but not quite what they were before covid.

Don't expect air conditioning, but do expect a balcony in most rooms.

Nigel, Mignon....thanks for your comments. It did not occur to me that I should mention that the hotel does not offer AC. I don't have it in my home either and it is also not working in my Porsche so that did not occur to me. Yes, there are balconies and large enough windows. In that we don't spend a large amount of time in the room, I'm fine with that.
But both of you....shame... you gave away the secret about the food and service. Despite its relative large size, the place retains a certain family run gemütlichkeit that my wife and I both enjoy.

certain family run gemütlichkeit

exactly.

Before covid they gave us a jar of home made jam when we made reservations directly with them. A very nice little touch...

My wife and I stayed at Sure Hotel by Best Western, across the street from the Munich Hauptbahnhof (main train station and just to the north of the station on Arnulfstrasse. We were in and out of Munich for two days, sightseeing, using hotel overnight. But it worked ok. Hotel is basic, no thrills, but clean and affordable. We were there last September, the rates were ok too.
