Need Munich area Xmas markets suggestions

I plan on going to Munich the first week of December for Christmas markets. I would like to visit other towns and cities as well to see their markets too.

Would I be better off staying the entire time in Munich and taking day trips by train, kind of like a wheel with Munich as the hub? Or should I start in Munich and make a chain out of the trips, staying in a different town each night? The problem there is schlepping luggage every day as well as finding eight different hotels.

One place that I do not want to miss is Salzburg and it's markets.

Definitely overnight in Salzburg if you can swing it. We did both Munich and Salzburg in December 2022 and it was a perfect duo. I would not move around each night for other day trips though.

Christmas Markets in various towns will offer much the same merchandise. Seeing more markets will not imho increase the shopping pleasure much.

To get the feel of a town requires a couple days for us. On a day trip we lose too much time just riding on the train.

For a week we would probably divided our time Regensburg 2days. Munich (or Augsburg) 2days and Salzburg 2 days. Munich is a large town and there is a learning curve about how to get around. Munich's Marienplatz Christmas Market can have overwhelming crowds in the evening.

We did a Christmas Market day trip from Stuttgart to Esslingen one year. I remember how unappealing the ride back to Stuttgart was on cold, dark winter night. I guess we are just not day trip folks.
