We will be ending our cruise in Nuremberg and are planning to rent a car ( Hertz) to tour the country side and return it to Munich. We want to stay away from as much traffic as possible. Any suggestions as to where to pick up a car in Nuremberg and drop off point in Munich?
You can get a good deal by using AutoEurope. For Nurnberg, there are several locations including the one at the rail station. You can easily get a taxi from where the Viking cruise ship port is located to the Hertz rental office. Make sure the city office opening hours (which will be shown on the AutoEurope site) before making your selection.

Last time I rented a car in Nurnberg I used Sixt. I'm gold with Hertz but Sixt was considerably less expensive. Be advised that if you cannot drive a manual transmission (standard) you need to let them know that up front and be aware they may not have a car for you. Also, the Audi S5 I got had one of the engines that shut down when you come to a stop. It took me by surprise (I normally drive stick) when it seemed like I was stalling the engine. Took a bit of time to figure it out; thank God I read German.
One other thing, make sure you can spell correctly if you use their navigation system. Regensburg and Regensberg are about 100km apart, and there's more Rothenburg...
For returning the car in Munich, I recommend dropping it at the airport. We rented a car from the Munich airport, and I believe it was much easier for us to begin our travels without having to negotiate any part of the city. The S-Bahn is a very convenient way to get from the Munich airport into town, if you will be staying in Munich.
