Need advice itinerary Munich and Salzburg

We will be visiting Munich the latter part of May 2017. Arriving Munich May 24 by train from Hamburg.. We have been to Munich and Salzburg many times, but it has been a few years since our last visit. We will be traveling with another couple who have not been there. Our plan is to spend 2 nights in Munich, then rent a car and over the next five days travel to Fussen to tour neuschwanstein, Garmisch, Salzburg , Berchtesgaden. Are any of these good for a home base, or do we need to stay in two different places? Is this feasible without spending tooo much time in a car? And, if so, where to start the trip and end up back in Munich to fly home. Thank you for your help.

Sue

Start with Fussen, then I would stay 2 nights in Salzburg (travel to Berchtsgarden from there), (2 nights in the area of Fussen.) Leave early in the day from Fussen to spend the day in Garmisch or weather permitting, visit the Zugspitz on the border - then arrive early evening in Salzburg.

Or perhaps head to Salzburg first, then you're a bot close to return to Munich for your flight home.

Have fun - Viel SpaSS!

Thanks Sue. What are the highlights for Fussen area for outdoorsy folks, re hiking, river rafting, spectacular vistas, things to see, etc. Thanks!
