I'm doing some research for an upcoming trip to Erfurt and I'm thinking about taking a little side trip to Naumburg. Has anyone been there recently? The cathedral looks gorgeous. Is it worth a morning or afternoon side trip from Erfurt just to see it?
Not recently, it was 2003 (good grief, how could that be?), but we spent a couple of nights in Naumburg and really enjoyed the town. We'd like to return. We also stayed in Erfurt on that trip - and other places.
I was sorry to miss Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha, and its historic baroque theater when we were in Erfurt. Weimar is a nice visit too, Farther from Erfurt, Quedlinburg is remarkable,
Good that you're thinking of going to Naumburg. I would absolutely recommend Naumburg an der Saale to see both cathedrals and their differences. Because of that singular difference, Naumburg is well known in German cultural history. That area of Germany has numerous cities worthy of seeing and exploring in connection to their cultural history....Erfurt, Weimar, Naumburg, Jena, Leipzig, Gotha, Halle, and others.
Yes, absolutely worth seeing. The fun starts with riding that historic tram from the railway station to the old town ... The pedestrian zone between the cathedral and the market square is dotted with beautiful townhouses. Check out Wenzelskirche (city parish church) also and maybe the museum in the historic townhouse Hohe Lilie if you have enough time.
