Hello, has anyone gone mushroom foraging in the Black Forest recently? If so, where did you go and was it part of a guided tour? Look forward to your feedback. Thx!
We stayed at the Kolmenhof Gasthaus in Martinskapelle, up the road from Furtwangen, at the end of July 2024. The source of the Danube River is literally a rock behind their building, with a 4-inch wide trickle of water emerging from it. Their restaurant was closed on Wednesday nights, so we ate at a nearby gasthaus/restaurant, Naturfreundehaus in Brend. They were temporarily featuring mushrooms throughout their menu, and I understood that many of these had been foraged locally, and weren’t just from a produce supplier.
We didn’t actually forage ourselves, and were not on a guided tour, but I figured I’d give you the place names and time of year, if that provided any useful information. Maybe the gasthauses could provide a guide contact, or foraging advice, or other details?
You can look at the Bavarian and Oberpfalzer Forests in the East in Autumn too. Make sure you know what you are picking.
FYI: most folks who forage are not keen on revealing the prime places to look for fungi. Many areas worldwide are over-foraged and those who rely on them for subsistence - either as their own food or to sell - are increasingly secretive about their favorite spots.
Good luck!
