(August 2025) Museums in Berlin with special exhibitions - entry with Museum Pass?

Hi! We are planning to be in Berlin August 13-14 and are thinking about getting the Museum Pass Berlin.

I've seen people complain that when museums had special exhibitions, the museum would not honor a WelcomeCard Museum Island and they had to pay full admission price. ( for example back in 2018, https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/germany/berlin-welcome-card-with-museum-pass ) Can anyone tell me if that will also apply to the Museum Pass Berlin? And if so, where can I find which museums will be having such special exhibitions? (I tried looking on the exhibitions page at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin site, but couldn't figure it out.)

Right now we are thinking to visit Museum Island one day:
Neues Museum,
Altes Museum,
Bode-Museum

And head toward the Brandenburg gate the next day:
Gemäldegalerie,
Kupferstichkabinett,
Reichstag dome

Berlin might not be the best place for it, but I happened to read about the pigment ultramarine, how rare and expensive it was (to the point that it's use tended to be limited to the coat of Christ or the Virgin), and how it may be a color that a computer monitor can't render properly. So a mini-quest of my vacation will be to see if I can see it in person.

List of actual exhibitions from the Berlin state museums:

Actual admission and tickets regulation (check admission section):

Did you make a reservation for Reichstag already?

I am not sure what you mean by the "ultramarine" section but I know something about Berliner Blau or Preußisch Blau. I recommend the German Wikipedia entry for more information. Is this related to whyt you mean?

I recommend DeepL for best translation from / to German.

Thank you for the reply, MarkK.

Yes, those are the pages on the smb.museum site I was looking at. In particular, on the plan-your-visit/prices-tickets/ page, it says:

"In connection with special exhibitions, it may be necessary to book additional tickets to visit the museum. Please refer to the respective exhibition websites for more information."

So I am trying to figure out which of the museums I am interested in have special exhibitions that require additional tickets. And I regret to say that I am confused. Here are three examples of special exhibitions at the Neues Museum:

  1. "Dioscuri – The Given Day" from 12.04.2025 to 23.11.2025, and on that page at the bottom it says "A special exhibition" while on the right side of the page there is a "Prices / Tickets" section that says "Neues Museum 14,00 EUR Concessions 7,00".

  2. "On Paths Untrodden" from 23.05.2025 to 08.02.2026. At the bottom it says "A special exhibition" but in the bar on the right side there is no "Prices / Tickets" section.

  3. To crown my confusion,"The Crown of Kerch" says "A special exhibition" at the bottom, and in the "Prices / Tickets" section mentions "Museum Pass Berlin 3 days for permanent exhibitions". But this is such a long-running exhibition (19.10.2017 to 22.09.2027) that I can't imagine it means the Museum Pass Berlin is not good for the Neues Museum for ten entire years.

We may just have to purchase the pass and hope it works out to be worthwhile.

For the Reichstag, we have submitted a reservation request and have received an acknowledgement but the request is apparently still being processed.

For the color Ultramarine, I meant

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultramarin#Nat%C3%BCrliches_Ultramarinblau,_Fra_Angelico_Blau

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapislazuli#Pigment

As I said, perhaps Berlin isn't quite the right place, but I can ask someone at the Gemäldegalerie. :)

Edit: If I ignore the statement to "Please refer to the respective exhibition websites for more information." but go to the museum venue sites, instead, the Tickets & Admission page for the Alte Nationalgalerie says:

During the special exhibition 'Camille Claudel and Bernhard Hoetger.
Emancipation from Rodin', holders of the Annual Passes BASIC and
CLASSIC, the Berlin Welcome Card (All Inclusive and Museumsinsel) and
the Museum Pass Berlin (3-day ticket) are required to book a paid
ticket (4 euros regular/2 euros reduced) in advance online. Holders of
the Annual Pass CLASSIC PLUS and of the Kombiticket Museumsinsel are
exempt from the co-payment obligation and book a free ticket in
advance.

Unfortunately, the Tickets & Admission page for the Neues Museum itself refers me to the exhibition pages I listed above:

In connection with special exhibitions, it may be necessary to book
additional tickets to visit the museum. Please refer to the respective
exhibition websites for more information.

I was in the Altes and the Bode one day last weekend. That took all day. The Neues is in between those two, but I can't imagine doing all three in one day. With just doing two in one day I didn't think the museum pass was worthwhile. The Rodin special exhibit at the Altes is excellent!

And yes, you should have your pass for the Reichstag already. I didn't get one and had to settle on exterior shots only. Not that I'm complaining, because the Tiergarden early in the morning was really nice. Be aware there's a lot of construction going on around the Reichtag. Plus, there are a lot of barriers around "politically sensitive" building throughout the city.

Thank you for the reply KGC.

I will keep in mind, and not be disappointed if we can only manage two museums the first day. Being a bit autistic, I know I can get overwhelmed. Though maybe we will zip into the Neues to wave hello to Nefertiti.

Do you have an idea how much time we should allot for the Gemäldegalerie the next day?

We did get our confirmation about the reservation to visit the Dome, so that's good. I set it for 19:45 in the hopes being able to see the sunset and Berlin after dark while we are up there. (Google tells me that sunset is at 20:33 in Berlin that day.) But perhaps we will be required to leave before that.

Sounds like a good plan for the Reichstag. I have not been through the Gemaldegalerie, so I can't comment on that. And, as far as i know, Nefertiti's mummy is in the British Museum. But you should have a great trip. Remember, Berlin is built on a swamp; every "hill you see in and around the city is actually made up of the piles of debris from the ruins in WWII. That's kind of sobering.
