Munichnyone tell me how long it takes to get from the Munich Airport to the train station

Can anyone tell me how long it takes to get from the Munich Airport to the downtown train station? How difficult is it to get form the one place to the other?

It takes approx 40 min to get from the S-Bahn station at the airport to the Hauptbahnhof (main downtown station). There are two S-Bahn leaving from two separate tracks at the station and coming into town from different directions. Whichever S-Bahn is leaving next will get you to the Hbf soonest.

It's not difficult. Just buy your ticket from an automat in the station, or upstairs at the MVV counter and hop on the train. The S-Bahn is underground in town, so you won't see anything above ground; there will be nothing noticeable about the Hauptbahnhof station . There will be a diagram on the wall of the train showing the stations. Follow it so you know when you are coming to the Hauptbahnhof. The stations before are Hackerbrücke, on the S1, and Karlsplatz, or Stachus, on the S8.

It is very easy to take the S-Bahn lines 1 or 8, about 45 minutes. They run frequently, so you probably don't need a schedule, but schedules are reflected through the usual DB rail link.

Another option to consider is the Lufthansa Airport Bus. It's about a 40 minute ride on the bus from the airport to the main train station in Munich. The cost is 17 euro for a roundtrip. I bought the tickets in advance on-line, and found it very easy to find and use. I liked the idea of the bus a bit better than the train, knowing we were going to have a lot of luggage to maneuver with.

For a single traveler, the bus costs only slightly less for a one way trip (10,50€ vs 10, 70€ for an MVV single trip ticket on the S-Bahn). However, if you need any additional transport to get from the Hbf to your hotel in the Innenraum (zone 1), the MVV ticket will cover that, the bus ticket will not.

If your hotel is around Marienplatz (e.g. Viktualienmarkt), the S8 will get you there in 38 minutes, for 10,80€. The bus (according to their website) can take 45 minutes to the Hbf. From there it is an additional 3-4 minutes and 1,40€ from the S-Bahn station to Marienplatz.

And if you buy a Gesamtnetz Tageskarte, for 12,-€, it will cover all of your travel by all conveyances of the MVV (U-/S-Bahn, trams, and buses) for the rest of the day. The bus fare won't cover that either.

And the Partner Gesamtnetz Tageskarte, for 21,30€, less than twice the one-way bus fare, 4,26€/pers, will cover all of you travel for up to five people from the airport to town and any other transport that day.

Lee- does the Partner Gesamtnetz Tageskarte cover a round trip to and from the airport on the same day? Assume a 10 hour layover...
Thanks

Yes. A Tageskarte (Tag=day, karte=ticket) is an all day pass (actually in this case valid until 6 AM the following morning) for all conveyances run by the MVV. Gesamtnetz means the entire network, 4 zones, including the airport. Partner is the version for up to 5 travelers together. So a Partner Gesamtnetz Tageskarte is an all day pass good for any conveyance in the entire network, for up to 5 people.
