I am thinking of going to Munich for a few days before going to Berlin to run the half marathon. I've never been so I've been googling but would like to ask for any areas that would be recommended. I'd like to be near some things to see. Thanks.
The transport system is excellent and as long as you are near a S-bahn or U-bahn station you can get almost anywhere.
Near the Marienplatz which is Munich's main square is where you want to be. This way you'll be within walking distance of places of interest.
We stayed at Hotel Eder and loved it. Between the train station and the city center.
Have a look at Motel One. They have several locations and I personally find them to be very comfortable, with large beds and great showers. Friendly to your budget too.
We stayed at Hotel Concorde, which is about a five minute walk to Marienplatz, U-Bahn, and the tram. We thought it was a great location, especially as the hotel itself was on a quiet street.
The excellent transportation allows you to stay almost anywhere nearby.
Unless you are itching to spend more money on accommodations, look at and consider adjoining towns.
There are relative bargains available.
We stayed 4 nights a Schiller5. Great breakfast hundred yards from metro and trains and short walk to main plaza
Hotel Schlicker is 500 metres from Marienplatz and a Sbahn station right in Marienplatz.
Great family run hotel, included breakfast and right in the thick of things....we walked everywhere, only taking public transport to go to the airport.
