Munich Walking Tours

Hello, just finished reading the Rick Steves book on Munich. He mentions so good walking tours but I wanted some first hand information on recommended walking tours.

Thank for all the great information I've received so far. A wealth of information.

have you tried his city walking tour on the europe app. we did the one in munich and was good ( like all his other city walks) best part is they are free and you can do them at your own pace.

If you are interested in a history, I would strongly recommend "Third Reich Tour".

Reading the up to date reviews on Trip Advisor, Radius seems to be the most popular as well as Mikes Bikes. I haven't used them personally, as went on a private tour there with Dark History Tours. I don't go on the "free" tours as my one experience with them in Edinburgh was truly awful and a big waste of my time.

There is something to be said for going on a walking or bike tour with a guide as opposed to listening to an audio guide. You can ask questions, get recommendations for restaurants, find out about local events, as well as get the quirky bits of the history of a city. For 13 euro it is hard to beat the price.

Not to dis Rick or anything, but his walking tour through Frankfurt isn't as good as it could be. It misses some of the best bits of the city and some of the info is incorrect. Perhaps Munich is similar?

We did the free walking tour by New Munich Tours Sandeman. We met at the Marienplatz and the tour lasted a couple of hours. My husband gave the guide 20 Euros for each of us. It was very informative and well worth it, in my opinion.

We really enjoyed the RS recommended Munich Walks tour. We did the "Hitler's Munich" and thought it was exceptional.

Another fun way to explore is on bikes. Hook up with a fun bike tour like Mike's Bikes.

I think the biggest problem with the 'free' tours, especially those of Sandemans is that the quality of the guides is very hit and miss. My guide in Munich was so bad I just left the tour about half way through and gave the guide $5 for half a tour. He was bored and it showed, or else he just didn't want to be guiding that day. The tours you pay a set fee for seem to have better guides - at least that's the case with the ones I have taken in other cities.

Not every free tour is disappointing. I have had great experiences with the Global Greeters Network. The Greeters Network, provides enthusiastic, knowledgeable local guides, who speak your language and they do NOT accept tips.

I booked a Greeter in Paris last year. I emailed the main office to ask for advice about how much to tip my greeter and was informed that the guides do not accept tips but I was welcome to make a donation to the network, which I gladly did. I felt odd about having a private guide all to myself (a solo traveler), so I brought a small gift from Atlanta for my Greeter.

This year, I have booked a "greet" with a Zagreb Greeter as well as a Munich Greeter. If you're interested, attached below is a link to the Munich Greeters. Cheers!

Raymond,

I've used Radius Tours for both walking tours as well as day trips to Dachau and Neuschwanstein, and would certainly recommend them. I found their Third Reich tour to be especially interesting.

If you want to try something a bit different, you could also look at http://munich.citysegwaytours.com/ (I believe there are a couple of firms offering that type of tour).

Marti, I agree with you that some free tour guides are very good. The difference is the company managing the free tours. The greeters are volunteers that are doing the tours, usually one on one, because of desire to show off their town. The Sandeman's tour guides are doing it to earn money, hoping to earn enough tips to do better than break even. If a tip is expected, and stressed throughout the tour, then I don't consider that a 'free' tour. Even accounting for that, some of Sandeman's free tour guides are very good and as such they earn the most in tips, and more power to them. It's just that I'm not the only one who's been disappointed in some of their free tours.
