Munich vs Nuremberg vs ??

We leave Prague on a Thursday and fly out of Munich on a Saturday morning, so we have 1+ day to spend somewhere. Originally we planned to stay in Munich, but now we're thinking of staying in Nuremberg or somewhere else in Germany instead. What would be the best place to experience 1 day? We're travelling with 2 kids and prefer castles or nature (although my husband is now thinking about the Nuremberg ring).

The Nürburg ring is not anywhere close to Nuremberg. It is half-way between Frankfurt and Cologne.

Maybe stay closer to Munich, perhaps in Regensburg?

😂 Clearly my husband has selective hearing! He though I was saying Nurburg - not Nuremberg. Thanks for clearing that up!

We are planning to take the bus/train route from Prague -> Nuremberg -> Munich, which is why we thought about stopping somewhere other than Munich. It sounds like Nuremberg or perhaps Regensburg would be the better choice for us!

By any chance, does the train from Nuremberg to Munich stop at the airport?

If you're taking that bus, just go to Nuremberg. Stay there and then take the train to Munich in a day or so. If my memory serves you'd have to change trains in Munich to get to the airport, but that's easy and fast. They run every 15-20 minutes.

Nuremberg is one of the better cities to walk around. They have the castle, the city walls, the open air market, great churches, a nice river running thru the old town with it's own little island. It was my local weekend hangout for years, but most folks I know who only have a day or two per city find it more charming than Munich (which I love for different reasons).

The train station is right next to the main bus terminal, and right across the street from the old city gate. Hotels are reasonable, the Bavarian Museum is really good, the DBahn (train) Museum is a hidden gem, the Durer house has a great big rabbit statue, the castle gardens are nice for picnics, the walk along the Pegnitz river is lots of fun in the evening, there are good antique shops in back alleys; you'd be hard pressed not to have a good day there.

And the local wurst and beers are good. (Avoid Tucher beer, it's not that good.) Try a currywurst for something different.

Unfortunately it does not, you'll have to go into Munich first then back out. If you stay in Regensburg there is a direct train from there to the airport so that might weigh into your decision.
