munich train from airport

We are arriving at the Munich airport tomorrow. Is it easy to catch a train to the main station in Munich?

Yes, very easy. Sbahn trains runs very frequently back and forth from the airport. Two lines serve the airport, but from he aiport, they both only head in one direction, towards the city. Depending on where you're staying, another station may be more convenient than the Hauptbahnhof (main station).

When you leave the arrivals area, follow the signs for the S-Bahn. You will cross a large outdoor courtyard and enter another building. Follow the signs downstairs to the S-Bahn platform. You can buy your tickets right on the platform while you wait for the train. The ticket kiosks have an English function, so it will be easy to find the ticket you want. Depending on what other travel you might be doing that day and how many people you have in your party you will either want to get a single ticket into the centre of Munich or purchase a Bayern Ticket.

You can take the first train that stops at the platform after you purchase your ticket. Both trains that go to the airport also go to the city centre, one takes a little longer, though. If you didn't figure out which train you were getting on before hand, you can figure it out once you are on the train by looking at the station signs and following the rail-line maps posted in the train so you know when your stop is coming up.

You'll see how easy it is when you get there.

Hope this helps.

Two different S-Bahn lines serve the airport. The S8 goes around to the east and enters the city at Ostbahnhof (east station), then goes under the middle of town (Marienplatz) to the Hauptbahnhof, then farther to the west of Herrsching or Weßling. Both the S1 and the S8 get to the Hbf in about the same time. Whichever one is leaving next will get you to the Hbf soonest.

The signs for S8 give the final desination, Herrsching or Weßslingf or ?. The S1 goes around town to the west and enters at Laim, going to the Hbf, then under town, then to the Ostbahnhof, its final destination. But it takes longer to get to Ost. So, if you want to go to Ostbahnhof, don't take the S1, that says Ostbahnhof, take the S8. It also goes to Ostbahnhof and gets there sooner.

Here is the map of the Munich S-/U-Bahn system.

The S-Bahn runs so frequently that you don't need a schedule, but How to Look Up Train Schedules Online will give you a schedule between Munich airport and any particular train station. Use it if you have some longer train rides to plan.
