Munich to Vilshofen Port

We are working on plans for a Christmas Market river cruise, and we'd like to fly into Munich to spend a day or two in that area. If we do that, then we have to get ourselves to Vilshofen Port. Is this easy to do? One option looks like the train and another might be something like mydaytrip. Has anyone here used mydaytrip? Would you recommend it or not, what are the watchouts?

It looks like there might be a direct train from Munich, but I'm seeing mixed information as to whether it goes direct into Vilshofen or to another town, like Passau. Help?

According to the dbahn website, the Munich to Vilshofen route is serviced by regional trains that end in Passau. Vilshofen would be one of the intermediate stops. It's 1 km from the train station to the dock. Walk or take a taxi.

The Bahn schedule website currently has schedules only through Dec. 10, 2022, but I wouldn't expect their schedules to change substantially, if at all, after that. Currently there are a lot of direct RE connections from the Hbf in Munich to Vilshofen in just under two hours.

At what time do you need to be at the boat dock? The earliest arrival from Munich is at 7:01; that is a one change connection. The first direct connection arrives at 7:44, so I can't see you needing to stay in Vilshofen overnight to catch you boat.

We need to be at the boat dock between 12 noon and 3 p.m. for a 3 p.m. launch, from my understanding, so it's not early arrival, which is good.

As I said above, I'm using the Bahn schedule website, and there is no mixed information on that site. The direct REs from Munich stop in Vilshofen on their way to Passau, and that would be the fastest way to get to Vilshofen.

There are also long distance trains (ICEs) on that line that go from Plattling, which you could get to by regional train from Munich, to Passau without stopping in Vilshofen. But then you would have to go back from Passau to Vilshofen by regional train. That would not be the fastest way to get to Vilshofen. Are you looking at some website that is trying to route you by ICE to Passau and then back to Vilshofen?

That could be it, Lee. I did see direct to Vilshofen from some results, like Rail Europe, but then others were not clear about whether or not there was a transfer to get to Vilshofen. Thanks for confirming!

Bahn.com will just take you to the Bahn site I linked to earlier (above). it has far more options available than you get with Bahn.com. Why not go there directly.

If the "reiseauskunft" site is too hard to remember, make it a favorite.

But for sure, don't start with some third party website which might try to direct you to a connection that's more profitable to them.

There is a direct train every hour at minute 24 (as mentioned above, terminus of the train is Passau), travel time 1:57. Cheapest fare is a Regio-Isar-Donau ticket (€31/2, book and print out in advance at www.bahn.com); maydaytrip and similar companies charge €250+ for the trip. The taxi from the Vilshofen station to the dock shouldn't cost more than €10; the biggest taxi company seems to be Traudl Taxi (no personal experience; I wonder why transfer isn't provided by the cruise company?).

Thank you all!

Yes, the cruise line will only do transfers from the airport, so we could go back to the airport and get the transfer with them, in theory. But I thought we might get better scenery via train or we might get some sightseeing with a company like mydaytrip or some other car/tour service.
