Munich to Vilshofen

Here is a case where you need to give us more information. When are you traveling is the most important. I am about to go on the Bahn website and look up trains from Munich to Vilshofen. I think there might be a single train for Munich to Passau with a stop in Vilshofen, or a route with a connection, maybe in Plattling. I've been Munich to Plattling and Plattling to Vilshofen (spent the night in Vilshofen, so I know it's normally possible, but what might be happening right now for some reason. So what are the specific trains, and the date and times, that you want to travel?

Ok, I just checked for August 20, and the Munich to Vilshofen route does show the train to Landshut or maybe Plattling, with a but a bus from there to Vilshofen. The symbol indicates that it is an SEV, a Schienen Ersatz Vekehr, a bus substitute for a train, which likely means that they are working on a section of track and busing passengers around that section.

This is not an unusual occurrence in Germany. They are doing maintenance on the line and busing you around that section. You'll get off the train in Landshut, or wherever, and there will be buses in front of the station, which will take you to Vilshofen; no problem.

Thanks for replying so quickly, we are traveling on 30th September, I know that's a fair way away but I like to get things organized early it stops me from stressing to much.

So just don't worry about it. It happens all the time. It's well organized. You might lose a little time in the connection, but you'll still get there. Are you coming in the day before and spending the night in Vilshofen?

I spent a night there in 2007 on the way from Nürnberg to Passau. I stayed there because I thought it would be less expensive than Passau. I found a nice, inexpensive little place there that catered to cyclist doing the Danube trail to Vienna.

Are you flying into the airport in Munich? You know that there is a bus that goes from the airport to Freising where you can catch the same train going to Vilshofen (Landstuhl, Plattling, wherever you catch the SEV bus). You don't have to go into Munich.

There is a rail replacement bus part of the way on your travel date. You will see that when you look up trains and times. If you open the details you will see the symbol that indicates that.

Are you originating in Munich, or at Munich Airport? If you start at Munich Airport you should enter that in the trip planners, as it is not necessary to go in to Munich proper in your case.

If you open the details you will see the symbol that indicates that.

It used to be that when you opened the Details, it showed the bus and indicated in letters that it was an SEV, Rail Replacement Bus. Now it just shows a train symbol with an arrow pointing to a bus symbol - same thing.

It looks like there are three train options from Munich Hbf in the direction of Vilshofen, RE2, RE25, and RE3. All but RE3 switch to the bus at Landshut, and it's about a 2½ hour bus ride to Vilshofen. They switch at Landshut because the service ends there. RE3 goes on to Dingolfing, from which it's less than 2 hrs on the bus. If that's important to you, you might want to take the RE3 from Munich. Landshut, however, is a bigger station with more services.

Here is the station layout for Dingolfing. There are two SEV bus stops in front of the station. There will probably be signage to tell you which stop to go to, but my guess it's stop 2, across the street from the Bhf, since it's lined up on Bahnhofstr. in the direction of Plattling.
