Flying into munich 9.17 and out of Vienna 9.24. Planning 2 nights in Munich and last 2 in Vienna. Please help on various in between - I’d like to do Salzburg and Hallstatt, also considering surrounding towns (we love outdoors, possible hiking and exploring, smaller towns). Can you experts help with itinerary, also travel? We love traveling by trains but realize some of the smaller towns may need car. Should we extend our base to Munich 4 nights and rent car around there, then head on over to Vienna via train and surrounding areas?
So many questions, I know. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

You can easily do it by train. Only thing if you want to do Berchtesgaden (near Salzburg) it would be better by car. You don't want a car in Vienna. In fact, it would be best not to have one in Salzburg.
Consider visiting HerrenChimse (sp) between Munich and Salzburg, old King Ludwig had a palace there, a copy of Versailles.

Thanks for the tip, any help if we stay Munich for 2 nights, travel towards Vienna for the last 2 nights, fill in with Salzburg and Hallstatt? Is this relatively easy via train with our carry on? Or, better to keep 3 night Munich and 4 nights Vienna and day trip out.
