Munich to Venice

I'm planning my trip to Italy, flying into Munich at 10:30 am and staying one night. I'd like to take the night train into Venice. This is scheduled for late March 2018. What is the average rate per person for a sleeper. Also, we want to visit the porsche museum and mercedes museum, any suggestions on where to stay for easy access to the trains? Should we stay in the airport Hilton?

Please realize the Porsche and Mercedes museums are in Stuttgart. The BMW museum is in Munich. I would not take the night train to Venice. It's a one hour flight and should cost $65 - $125. Most likely the train will be more expensive even adding the cost of a hotel room for one night to the air fares. I have taken night trains years ago but don't do it since airfares are so cheap.

The bahn.de website should give you rates for the sleeper car but I would also suggest that you seriously consider flying instead. Air Dolomiti is part of Lufthansa and has direct flights from Munich to Venice. It is a GREAT low cost regional airline and I always use them personally when I'm traveling between Munich and northern Italy.

Spot checking pricing today I found that one way flights on March 14, 2018 are 57€ and there are 4 flights a day to choose from and the flight is only 1 hour. By contrast the night train takes almost 9 hours and the cheapest seat is 39€, the cheapest couchette in a 6-berth compartment is 59€ and the cheapest sleeper in a 3-berth cabin is 139€.

... without checked luggage and only 7kg allowed into cabin. Still, the price including luggage (€86) is way more attractive than the night train.

You mean up to 7kg carry on! Packing light for the win again.

But seriously, you comment reminded me that I should have pointed out that 7kg carry on is pretty strict as Air Dolomiti only flies Embraer 195's which have pretty limited overhead space compared to flying 737s or larger.

Thank you so much. Yes, I also checked flights today and it makes sense. We will go that route.

My daughter and I decided that we will take the train from Munich to Venice on July 31st. We made our decision hoping that it is a beautiful train ride through the countryside, and that the extra time taken will be worth it. We are staying in a hotel close to the train station (King's Hotel First Class). The train I have booked leaves Munich at 11:34am and takes 6.5 hours, no transfers. We booked first class hoping that we'd get a little extra comfort for the long trip. Cost = 92Euro/person.

With sufficient advance purchase, for less than a hundred euro for both people, you can book on the train. As mentioned above, that train takes 6½, maybe less time than flying, by the time you factor in time getting to the airport, checking in, security, pre-boarding, flight time, de-planing, finding ground transportation, and getting to the airport. The train from Munich to Venice goes over scenic Brenner Pass. Plus you get less hassle and bigger seats.
