Munich to ???? to Berlin what should fill in the blank?

Good afternoon, My girlfriend and I plan on flying to Germany for a 10 day trip in 2020. Arriving march 7th in Munich in the morning and departing Berlin march 15th in the morning again. We are in our twenties but not looking for the club experience rather amazing food and art along with history and of course beer! We plan on being in Munich from the 7th a Saturday to Tuesday until about lunch time before heading north. (Any Munich recommendations would be great but I will post a separate thread)

We would like some recommendations on what our second stop should be.
Time wise we need to fill from Tuesday afternoon/evening to Thursday afternoon.
Some quick research shows Dresden and Nuremberg are on the way so they are on the list.

What are some of your recommendations? We enjoy museums, art, food and wandering through the city.

By Thursday we want to be in Berlin we are meeting friends and spending our time between Berlin then a day trip to Potsdam will be part of it as well.

My son spent 6 months in Germany as a student, half in Berlin and half in a small town near the Czech border. Dresden was his absolute favorite city in Germany.

Nuremberg gets my vote. Beautiful city, significant Nazi history to explore (see especially the Documentation Center and rally grounds), great bratwurst and beer and the Albrecht Dürer house if you’re interested in learning more about him.

Mmirkovi,

Congratulations on your upcoming trip to Germany!

My vote is for Nuremberg.

You mentioned food - it's where the nuremburgers are from (small bratwurst sort of like breakfast links in the USA but much better).
Art - t's the hometown of Albrecht Dürer. You can even visit his house. Then there's the German National Museum (Germanisches Nationalmuseum) with a great collection of art ranging from prehistory to the 20th century.
History - there's the Imperial Castle and gorgeous medieval architecture around every corner (well much was rebuilt after WWII just like Munich).
Beer - well it's Germany, of course, they have excellent beer and quite a few biergartens. I recommend Hexenhäusle right on the castle moat behind the castle. Get yourself a mass of beer some nurnburgers, kartoffelsalat, and sauerkraut. YUM!
Nuremberg has a wonderful pedestrian-only core with many shops and just walking around is a treat.

However, if you are into Baroque architecture then Dresden is the place for you.

Whatever you decide I hope you guys have a great trip, you will love Germany!

I’d guess that the food is better in Nuremberg and the art museums are better in Dresden. Does Meissen interest you? My vote is Dresden. Book Historic Green Vault in advance.

Along the (train) route from Munich to Berlin there are Nürnberg, Bamberg, Erfurt, Leipzig. If you are interested in the history of modern architecture, you could include (by a slight detour) Dessau, which is ugly as a city but has to offer the Bauhaus, the Meisterhäuser (build by Bauhaus architects just 100 years ago) and the recently opened Bauhaus Museum. Adjacent there is the delightful park "Wörlitzer Gartenreich", a Unesco world Heritage site. If you are interested in the history of Lutheran reformation you'd include of course Wittenberg.

Dresden, for the Green Vault and the Frauenkirche. We spent one day and one night there and I have always wanted to go back to see more. Dresden is a jewel of a city.

Nuremberg is more attractive than Dresden - both were hammered in the war, but Nuremberg rebuilt much of the city as it previously was, while most of central Dresden is Warsaw Pact concrete apart from the big-name restored buildings along the river. Nuremberg isn't lacking in art either - there's the gigantic Germanisches Museum with plenty by the local celebrity Duerer. There's also Germany's national railway museum if that interests you and, of course, the Third Reich-related sites.

Three sites in ten days sounds like a great relaxing trip.

Munich- Alte and Neue Pinoteka, and Lenbach House.

Nuremberg is an hour north of Munich so it is an easy stop with a full day of touring. It is only 3-3.5 hours on the fast train from Berlin.

Truthfully, most things in Germany have been rebuilt since WWII. Munich, Nuremberg, Dresden and Berlin, etc. (even Rothenberg ob der Tauber, which did sustain substantial damage too).

Best to review the RS video's and guidebook suggestions on the places and opportunities.

I personally prefer Nuremberg. The Germanishe's National Museum has a lot of original art that has copies elsewhere in Germany... Like at the German History Museum in Berlin.

Have a great time.

Here are a few places that came through the war intact, undamaged...Heidelberg, Eutin/Holstein, Flensburg, Plön, Lüneburg, Celle, Stade, , if you want to focus on that aspect, also lovely and interesting places.

Now that I've actually been there, I'd say don't overlook Erfurt. Not over touristy, lots of beautiful buildings, cool Dom, a little Luther history, and an interesting East Germany museum right off the Domplatz.

Nuremberg and Dresden are good choices. Dresden did rebuild historical structures in the center but they did not do as good of a job, being part of East Germany, as did Nuremberg. I think Nuremberg is much underrated and the German cultural museum there is especially great. In many ways I prefer it to Munich. Dresden is an especially great museum city. You can get to Nuremberg cheaply on the landes ticket on a regional train.
