Munich to Slovenia train travel

We’re a family of six adults traveling from the Munich Ostbahnhof station (near our hotel in Haidhausen) to Slovenia via train on Sunday in late September. We plan to get off the train at Lesce-Bled (Slovenia) because we’re starting our Slovenia travel north of Ljubljana. I have found good info about this route on the Man in Seat 61 website, but the process for booking tickets is confusing me.

I’ve been using the bahn.de website to look for tickets. Is there any advantage to using the oebb.at website or any other websites instead?

Because we’re six people traveling together, Bahn is automatically offering the group ticket (Sparpreis Europa Gruppe). When I follow the prompts, it takes me to the payment page, without giving me an option to select seats, so I haven't purchased the tickets yet. Is there a separate process I follow to select seats?

Do you have any tips to share for this trip?

Thank you very much!

Tickets do not automatically come with a reservation. You need to select that as an add on.
What you can do is buy the ticket without reservation from Bahn (to get the group price) and then subsequently reserve seats for your trains on www.oebb.at. There you should be able to pick from a plan.

Hi AB,
I took this train in June of 2023 and booked through the DB website, It wasn’t a very full train-but I like to have reservations also.
To see how to get reservations for your group, I went on the DB website and chose the 8:15 train from Munich Hbf (you’ll be able to adjust this for your station).
I chose 6 people with no discounts. The Super Sparprels EuropaGrruppe came up. If you look at the bottom left you’ll see details. Click on it and scroll to the bottom. The details say that a seat reservation is included. After you put your information in, it should come up to select your seats.
The website also states that if you have a Deutschland ticket it may save you money.
I just got back from Germany last week and bought the €58 euro D ticket for July. You can go anywhere in Germany on a regional train or bus or UBahn or SBah on that ticket- for a month, and it also includes Salzburg, Austria.
Hope this helps, have a great trip,
Cheryl

Border controls between the countries you will pass through/into have been imposed of late. I'm not up on the details for your travel period; you may or may not be asked by armed officials to show your passports, possibly on the train - or you might need to exit the train to be processed.

Not when leaving Germany for Austria.

Thank you all for this helpful information. I purchased the tickets via the DB app. It assigned the seats. It didn't allow me to select. But all six are near each other. I was hoping we could get seats together in a six-person compartment but they assigned us seats in a coach with regular seating. For the last hour of the journey, we transfer to a second train and we were assigned to a compartment for that train, so that will be fun. I couldn't find any option to modify our seat assignments for the first train. Looking forward to the journey! Thank you again.
