Munich to Salzburg-via train-Need tix in advance?

Hi, will be taking a train from Munich to Salzburg in late March. Do I need to need to reserve train tickets in advance? Or, can I assume that trains run there fairly regularly, so could get ticckets the day of the trip? Please advise, thank you! Karen

Check bahn.com for your dates, but trains seem to run about every half hour for the ~90 minute trip. Saver fares now are 18-26 Euros, full fares about 35 euros. Check the "Offers" heading for things like group traveler, or Regional Offers like the Bayern Ticket.

There is no need to book tickets in advance. But if you choose an long distance train (RJ or EC) you can save approx. 50% of the standard fare by booking some weeks out (bookings open six months out). OTOH, if you choose a local train, which takes only 15 to 25 min longer, you can use a cheap Bayern Ticket (€26/1, 34/2), provided your departure time is after 9am (no restriction on weekends).
