Munich to Salzburg to Vilshofen or Passau...which is easier?

Hello All,
I need your help.
I would like to spend two nights in Munich and two nights in Salzburg before embarking on a river cruise from either Vilshofen or Passau in June 2017. Which city is easier to reach from Salzburg.
Also what are the travel options and challenges between Munich, Salzburg, and Vilshofen or Passau?
Would a one way automobile rental make sense?

Thank you very much.

Hi bluehenner,

I'd suggest to drive to Passau. It might be no difference if you drive to Passau or to Vilshofen, regarding the difficulty. However Passau is a very nice city. Worth a visit, without a question. Vilshofen is only a small town. If I were you, I'd take the opportunity to have small stop in Passau.

You can reach Passau from Salzburg quite easy by car via the Autobahn. I would consider a one way car rental from Salzburg to Passau. It would take about 4 hours with public transport from Salzburg to Passau.

From Munich to Salzburg is a quite good train connection.

Kind Regards,
Katrin

Will you already have a car, or would you be renting it for a day in Salzburg just to make the trip and then turning it in in a different country when you get to Passau? The trip by car to Passau takes ~2½ hour according to ViaMichelin, but renting it and returning it will take time, so the whole trip will take well over 3 hours.

By rail you can go from Salzburg to Wels, Austria, on Westbahn for 10,40€/P, then from Wels to Passau for 18€/P. Total time would be 2½ hours, as fast as driving without having to take the time to rent and return the car.

Slower, but cheaper, would be to go by regional trains via Mühldorf (through Germany) using a Südostbayern-Ticket (regional pass) for 17€ single, 22€ for two. That trip would take 3h41m; the extra time might be worth the savings (17€ vs 28€ single, 22€ vs 57€ for two).

In each case you would need an extra leg to get to Vilshofen. Vilshofen is very close to Passau and a pleasant little town. I stayed there in 2007, on my way to Burghausen via Passau because I found Passau to be a little pricey vs Vilshofen.

Hi,

For your purpose I would dispense with the rental car. The cities/towns listed above can be easily reached by train. If you get a Westbahn route to your desired destination , all the better. You have max. flexibility in deciding since the ticket may bought on board. great trains and cheaper tickets too.

Katrin, Lee, & Fred,

Thank you for your help.
Time-wise and economically the train does make more sense.
I did some preliminary research for a one way car rental from Salzburg to Passau...1 day rental...over $300. Not happening!
