Munich to Salzburg question

Thanks to those who recently answered my Vatican City question. Really appreciate all the friendly help and advice. New question here. Our family of 3 lands in Munich on a Sat morning around 9:30am. We’re thinking we’d prefer to skip a day visit in Munich and instead just take some kind of train from the Munich airport directly to Salzburg. Is this possible? Is this even a good idea? If so, what might the travel look like? (FYI, I’d rather save Munich for a future trip specific to Germany and tie it into visiting my ancestral roots in Baden Baden, Black Forest areas.) Thanks again for the helpful advice!

See the thread "Train from Munich to Salzburg" on this fourm, started by Jace, who will be making the same trip from MUC airport.

The is no direct (i.e., no change) train connection from MUC to Salzburg. The is only one regional train leaving MUC, but it goes to Regensburg. To get to Salzburg, you would have to change at Landshut to a train to Mühldorf, at Mühldorf to a train to Freilassing, and at Freilassing to a train across the river to Salzburg. That's really the long way around and takes more time.

Most connection will be by S-Bahn into Munich - either the S-1 to the Hauptbahnhof or the S-8 to Ostbahnhof; the fastest connection is via the S-8 to Ost. In Munich, in either case you change to the same regional train that originates at the Hbf but stops at Ost.

There are also some long distant trains (Railjet or IC/EC) to Salzburg. Most don't stop at Ost, run less frequently, take longer and cost more. Take the hourly regional train from Ostbahnhof; the S-8 runs every 20 minutes.

If you buy a Bayern-Ticket at the airport, it will cover both the S-Bahn to Munich and the regional train from there. It's valid for any train that day (only a regional train and only for a specific day, so don't buy it until you get to the airport). It costs 34€ for the first adult and 10€ for each additional adult, up to 5 adults, total. Up to three children (up to 14 years) are free.

Many years ago we did a trip that included Italy, then Salzburg, then Berchtesgaden, then Munich.

We eventually took a taxi from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and later a train from B. to Munich. I don't remember changing trains, but this was many years ago.

It is possible (with a train change) as delineated above, and it is a great idea. I agree that there is no reason to stay in Munich for a night when Salzburg is not very far away and is fairly easy to reach. Go ahead and get to the first place you really want to be (and Salzburg, to me, is a great place to be!).
