Munich to Salzburg on first day with jet lag

We will be arriving this September on a 10 hour overnight flight from the US, which gets into MUC about 14:00.

One thought is to stay at the Hilton at the airport, then train to Salzburg in the morning. My other thought is to take the S8 train upon arrival to Munich central, sleep and eat in town, then go to Salzburg in the morning.

I have looked at DB and BRB and Railjet, and they all seem to use the S8 train from the airport which stops at the Munchen Ost station. So, would it be more fun to sleep and eat somewhere near the Ost station? I do want to get the train to Salzburg fairly quickly the next morning, to get our trip started. We will spend several days in Munich on the way back. I cannot decide, pros and cons please, and also I am quite confused ferreting out the most efficient trains.

We don't need to go cheap but don't like to waste money, but I have been looking at 1st class tickets. We are 72 and 69, fit and can walk anywhere.

Your flight is SCHEDULED to arrive at MUC at 14:00. It may not. Even if it does, it's a smart move to just get yourselves quickly to your overnight stop and tend to whatever personal needs you might have.

I think the best thing to do is to book a room in FREISING, which is a very pleasant town right near the airport and ideal for your circumstances.

From the MUC train station it's only 12 minutes by train to Freising.

From Freising to Salzburg the next morning, you'll be refreshed for the 2.5 hour train trip. I suggest the Bayern Ticket day pass (€39/2) and the 9:10 - 11:42 trip. You change trains after 27 minutes at Munich Hbf between 9:37 and 9:55, when the BRB leaves for Munich. There's no fussing around with seat reservations or pre-purchase with these trains. Just buy your ticket that morning and ride.

On Sat or Sun the Bayern Ticket is valid before 9 am. You could instead depart Freising at 7:09 or at 8:10 on those days and travel the same route, if you wish.

Our flight to Munich in 2022 arrived six hours late, and we got to our Munich hotel after midnight. I was happy that we had planned to stay in Munich, at the Marriott Aloft right across from the main Munich train station. We then left for Salzburg the next morning. So many things can go amiss flying these days.....
We bought all our tickets using the DB Navigator app, after setting up an account. It was SO easy, and it gave us the very nice senior discount.
Have a great trip!

Somewhat reverse of your plans, I took the high speed train from Salzburg to Munich, stayed at the Hotel Europäischer Hof (right across from train station), then took the S8 to the airport early the next day. I personally find hitting a pillow as soon as possible after that long dreary flight is best medicine for kicking off a trip. If your flight is on time and you get in to town by early dinner time, you can do a quick walk toward historic area, eat something, and then crash and be ready for action the next day. Or take Russ' suggestion to stay nearer the airport (he's always spot on with advice).

Wasn't the same exact question asked some months ago? I think so maybe ...

Regardless, It's not so rough to sit on the train for a while on your arrival day. More pleasant to get in the hotel and then get out for a walk around, but it is pretty nice to get to where you're going and get on with it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I do normally like to get farther along the road early in the trip, so to speak, so I am leaning towards getting the train to Salzburg right after we arrive at MUC. And hope we get to Salzburg in time for a nice shower and beer.

As mentioned in a Slovenia post, i like to minimize changes in lodging, so I would plan to go straight to Salzburg. If your plane is late, you can always find a place to stay in Munich or along the way.

You probably will be in time for a shower and beer!
Particularly since you need to get on the train anyway to get from the airport to Munich. It's not the shortest ride from an airport to a city core that there is. And Salzburg is a pretty quick and frequent shot from Munich nowadays - I remember that it used to seem to take longer, and was less frequent?

But anyway, you're getting on the train no matter what, so you may as well just ride the train a little more.

Sounds like fun! Have a great time! :)

In the past, when I was just passing through Salzburg to get to other places in Austria, I've arrived at MUC and immediately taken the S8 and the regional BRB to Freilassing, which is right across the river, in Germany, from Salzburg. I never had a problem with late arrival at MUC or the trains not being on time (the BRB runs hourly). If the hotel in Freilassing had not closed, I would do it again.

However, you might want to stay closer to MUC the first night. I like Freising, and, in good weather, it's fun to sit out in the Biergarten at Weihenstephan and have dinner. As Russ says, there is a regional train connection from MUC to Freising that takes about 12 minutes. However, that train runs only once an hour. Every 10 minutes there is a bus leaving MUC for Freising and the trip takes 22 minutes. They both go to the same place, Freising Bahnhof. So, unless the train is leaving imminently, take the bus, you'll get to Freising sooner.

In the morning, take the direct S1 from Freising Bahnhof to Ost Bahnhof. It takes 50 minutes. There are a few faster connections (44 to 46 minutes), but they have connections and only occur once an hour or less, so your most consistent connection would be the S1. Or, if you are taking one of the hourly trains that leaves first from the Hauptbahnhof you might want to get off there from the S1.

However, although there are things to do in Freising, with jetlag, you might not want to avail yourself of them. It only takes 30 minutes to get to Ostbahnhof by S8, and there are some Marriot hotels about a ¼ mile up the street to the NE of Ost.

As for the train to Salzburg, I've always taken the regional BRB. Everyone I've been on in the last 10 or so years has been a very modern, double-deck train with lot of space. Travel times are similar for all of the Ost-Salzburg trains and the BRB, with a Bayern-Ticket, is much more economical.

I would also not spend the extra money for 1st class. As a business traveler in the 1980s, on the company dime so to speak, I always went 1st class. I thought 2nd class was beneath me. Once I tried 2nd class, I decided 1st class was a waste of money. 2nd class is perfectly comfortable, just as fast, and maybe more interesting. The last time I rode in 1st class, I was the only person in the entire coach.

Adding to Russ' brilliant comment: I had to switch the DB site back to German, because in English the FAQ [Where can I go with this Pass?] about the Bayern Tagespasse was useless. In the German version, it's much longer, and EXPLICITLY says that the ticket is good to Salzburg and several other destinations in Austria.
