Munich to Salzburg Bayern Ticket Question

Hello. I have been reading this travel board but still have a question on the Bayern ticket from Munich to Salzburg.

We are staying the last night of an organized tour at Holiday Inn City Centre which is located above Rosenheimer Platz train station. Our group of four is then traveling, on our own, to Salzburg where we will catch the #840 bus at 11:15 to Berchtesgaden for the Eagles Nest Tour.

I understand the train leaves Munchen Ost at 9:05 arriving Salzburg 10:42. Do I need to take the S-Bahn to Munchen Ost? Can I buy the Bayen ticket at the Rosenheimer station for this?

Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If it's a WEEKDAY, then you must buy an additional ticket for the short trip to München Ost station that you will be traveling prior to 9 am. The Bayern ticket kicks in at 9:00. You can buy the Bayern at ANY train station in Germany.

If it's a Saturday or Sunday, you can use the trains prior to 9 am with a Bayern Ticket.

No, you don’t need to but it is the fastest way to get there. An alternative is a 10min walk through the wonderful neighborhood of Haidhausen.

Can I buy the Bayen ticket at the Rosenheimer station for this?

Yes, but like Russ says you can’t use your Bayern ticket before 9am on a weekday. You can take any SBahn to Ostbahnhof In only 1 min but that is cutting it close.

If it were me and the weather is nice I’d walk to Ostbahnhof. If it’s raining i’d buy my Bayern ticket and a single trip ticket at Rosenheimer and take the SBahn.

There is no need to go all the way to Salzburg if your destination is Berchtesgaden. Change in Freilassing and save time and money.

Particularly because the Bayern-Ticket covers the train from Freilassing to Berchtesgaden, but not the part of the #840 bus through Austria.

Thank you all. I think we will take the train all the way to Berchtesgaden. The transfer time is 7 minutes at Freilassing but I see it is from Platform 2 to Platform 1, so there shouldn't be a problem time wise, correct? What are your thoughts of booking tickets on DB website and getting tickets digitally?

Correct. But as always, be at the door of the train car before it stops, and get off when it does and find the stairs to the tunnel (Gleis 1 and 2 will be on different platforms). Since most people getting on the Berchtesgaden train will be changing from other trains, they will probably hold the Berchtesgaden train if the train from Munich is a little late. If not, oh well, there will be another train to Berchtesgaden in an hour, at 11:40. The later train still gets you to Berchtesgaden at 12:28, giving you enough time to catch the Eagles Nest tour.

A Bayern-Ticket is easy to buy from a ticket automat at the station. There will be one or more at Rosenheimer Platz S-Bahn station or at Munich East (Ost). You can buy it ahead of time; just make sure you put in the correct date as once purchased, it is non-refundable and non-exchangeable and only valid for that date. You also need to fill in the names of those traveling on the ticket before boarding the first train.

To save time at the station, you could purchase it online from the Bahn website. Make sure you put in four passengers, then put in from Muenchen Ost to Berchtesgaden, the date you'll want the ticket for and the time. Actually, the to: and from: and the time don't matter (as long as it is after 9 AM on a workday), and the website offers you the Bayern-Ticket for 4 people (@43€). Regardless of the actual train(s) selected, the ticket will be valid for any regional trains in Bavaria all day long.

BTW, whether you go from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden by bus or use the train from Freilassing, if you are using a Bayern-Ticket, it will cover your use of most of the buses in Berchtesgaden when you get there.
