We are flying into Munich in February. What are my travel options to go to Salzburg by train?
You can take a bus from the airport into the Munich Haupfbaunhof. The train to Salzburg is 1.5 hours.
Take the S8 to Munich East and transfer there to the regional train to Salzburg. Cheapest ticket for two is the Bayern Ticket, which covers the entire trip and is available in the MUC Airport Center. Look up connection details at Bahn.com.
You can take the Sbahn from the Munich airport to the Munich Hauptbahnhof main train station. Then you can take the fast Railjet train from Munich to Salzburg. We booked the Railjet online in advance and it went smoothly.
Please note that this method is not faster but much more expensive than using regional trains via Munich East: Bayern Ticket €36/2, RailJet €96.20/2 standard fare, €58.80/2 saver fare = train specific, money lost if your flight is late.
If you choose the Bavaria ticket, which is much cheaper be aware that you cannot use it on Railjet, so watch for the trains that qualify, especially when planning your to and from departure times if you are returning to Munich. Nobody wants to get stranded. Though, Salzburg is not a bad place to get stuck if you are getting stuck.
Thanks all! Flying into Munich then taking train to Salzburg, The Bayern Ticket looks like the best. Then taking the train from Salzburg to Venice. Need recommendations for that and then transfers in Venice. Your advice has been great, thanks again.
There is one morning and one afternoon train with single connections in Villach in 6 hours, as well as a direct night train, although that departs Salzburg at 2:20 am. Tickets at www.oebb.at
What connections do you need in Venice? Trains at https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
Also, if going to Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome, you have the option of using Italoteno. https://www.italotreno.it/en
